Hello all! I know this is one of many threads on 8700k OC'ing, however I'd like to ask, is delidding the 8700k realllyyyy worth it?

I had a 3770k and I took about 15*c off with a delid using Kryonaut! Are you guys getting the same results with the 8700k?

My current spec is this...

i7-8700k @ 4.6Ghz - 1.2v / Noctua NH-D14-T'Grizzly Kryonaut
Asus ROG Maximus X Hero / 16GB TG Dark Pro "8 Pack Edition" @3200Mhz
Crucial 480GB / Zotac AMP! Extreme Core GTX 1080Ti / Corsair RM750X

It's been stable all day, running a mixture of Prime, Cinebench, 3D Mark, Gaming and general usage while stressing too.

Temps top out at 89/90*c when running Prime Small FFT'S, 4.6Ghz @ 1.2v under load.

Could this be a 5Ghz chip on air after a delid? Is 5Ghz even worth it over 4.6Ghz gaming?

Thanks, any help or comments much appreciated!:p

I dropped 15-20 degrees when I delidded mine, so yes in terms of temps was delighted with the results. In turn allowed me to run benchmarks at 5.3 GHz and settled for 5.2 GHz daily clocks (likely fall over in very heavy synthetics but its in my HTPC and only used for gaming so meh), not possible prior to delidding.

With that said, as to if its worth depends if your CPU is currently the limiting factor to performance for gaming at 4.6 GHz. Not sure what your monitor is, but given you have a 1080Ti, I imagine its something like 1440p + and usually the limitation is on the GPU more often then not. Adding another couple of 100 MHz or so may not change things too much.

Or is the real question 'Do I need 4.6GHz or 5Hhz?' Most of us overclock not because we need the speed, but because it's fun to do. Few of us do work needing overclock speeds to do what we need done. We don't need extreme processing speed to process what we need done, in fact most of us would never see the difference running 5.0GHz makes instead of running 4.5GHz or even 4GHz. I process images with old i7 980X at 4.0GHz and i7 6700K stock (4.2GHz) rendering images and have no complaints about speed .. but maybe I'm just layed back and don't care if job takes 30 minutes instead of 25 minutes :p

Yes you need to delid... if you want 5.0+
changed 3 settings in the bios and booted up and completely stable with ram at XMP 8pack 4000 stuff 32gb 4x8gb
1.32v cpu and done...

If you want more clock then yes :) Get some Liquid metal for it too for best results, whether or not you make 5G or not I don't know, but you could pick up upto 200Mhz more for 24/7

Weather its right for you, only you can answer that but from a reduction of temperature point of view - go for it. Temps hold the 8700k back due to Intel's cheapness.

I delidded and dropped 20c, allowed me to hit 5GHz with 1.3v reducing power draw and reducing heat- was very easy with the debauer tool also
