That's great news Gibbo. Is the image quality much improved on these cards when compared to there predecessors and competitor (ATI always seemed to have a better IQ than Nvidea ) ?

Hi there

Image quality is certainly an improvement over the X1950 and 7900 series, no doubt of that. Its easily spottable, they look amazing. One single 8800 GTX will score 12,000 in 3D Mark 2006 with ease and they overclock very well.

From early benchmarks I have seen across the web you are wasting your time with a 8800GTX if you dont have a decent Core duo or very highly clocked Amd X2 2.8ghz+ to power it. The perf when running one with an Amd64 4000 2.4ghz was rubbish. The cpu was bottlnecking the card massively with syhnthetic benchmark scores 50% less than with a Core Duo. This doesnt surprise me as to get the best performance out of a highend sli/crossfire system you need the best cpu you can get your hands on. People with P4's and Amd64 etc wont be scoreg 12,000 in 3dmark06, the results I seen with these kind of chips was more like 7000 points. Buyers need to be aware of this kind of severe cpu bottleneck and dont swallow up all the hype expecting to score as high as the early reviews when they quite clearly wont if they dont have the best Cpu's powering it.

From the Inquirer:

"FEAR is one of our favourite benchmarks. And we thought it'd give a pair of G80, Geforce 8800 GTX cards in SLI a workout.

We got a 75 per cent performance increase over a single Geforce 8800 GTX card.

Yes, we are talking about G80, Geforce 8800 GTX times two.

Are you ready for some big numbers?

3Dmark03 scores 49,400.

For comparison, a 7950 GX2 dual core graphic card scores 29,800 in the same test. A single X1950XTX scores 19,500.

In 3Dmark06, the 8800 GTX SLI reaches almost 11,000. The 7950GX2 achieves around 10,000. In Fear, the dual G80 cards can score up to 48 frames faster than a single card - a massive performance increase - and some other games will benefit from it too.

Stay tuned for more numbers we just wanted to give you a hint. Oh yes, the single Geforce 8800 GTX scores 9,800 in 3Dmark, on the fastest AMD CPU to date"

So what 3dmark06 score do you think people will get with Amd64 's and P4's? Around 7000 is the answer to that, not going to be anywhere near 12000 thats for sure. Even the Amd X2's highly overclocked will probably be lucky to break 9000. A Core duo 6600 at stock with an 8800GTX scores just over 10,000.

I dont have mines at stock either, mines is at 3.4ghz but the vast majority of people out there dont have Conroes and the results they will get with the 8800GTX will be less than spectacular. Its only fair they are at least aware of the Cpu bottleneck instead of getting all these flash benchie numbers swamping their buying prowess.

this card is no bigger jump in performance than usual, every next generation card is as fast as the previous generation in SLI, more or less.

perhaps it will raise the bar for image quality when DX10 titles come flooding out but that's still miles away isn't it :)

it does look decent tech but i'll upgrade my 2005fpw to a 24" before i bother replacing my x1900xt-x

Why so hung up on 3dm06 scores, surely real world gaming performance is what matters.

A core2 duo or x2 won't out perform a highly clocked, single core, A64's in game performance by a significant enough margin to worry about when paired with highend graphics.Very few games,if any! benefit from dual core.

My Sandiego @ 3.24 compliments my x1900 crossfire setup superbly thanks.

Ive also got an X1900 crossfire setup, it was previously powered by an Amd 3700 @ 2.8ghz. The slowdowns I experienced with the Amd where awful and attributed to the Cpu, I now score close to double the 'minimum' fps in FEAR with a Core Duo at 3.4 with the same cards with the average fps improved as well. The Core duo significantly improves my gaming experience and fps by as much as 50% in many of my games in both the 'minimum' and average fps. The whole experience and immersion has improved enormously with the Core Duo over the Amd as it simplys offers a much more fluid experience reducing those horrible 'minimums' and slowdowns I experienced with the Amd chips when you have many physics effects/AI calculations to be done on the cpu and at the same time geometry calculations to pass to the gpus via the device driver. Its not all about the synthetic benchmarks, but they are the quickest example , gaming is reflected exactly the same with a better cpu when you are dealing with high end cards that offer more potential that the Amd cpus cant bring to the screen.
