Hi guys,

I've got an old 8800GT i use in my main PC and i've just noticed in Speedfan that it idles @ 81C, in use it's over 100C! i'm sure it never used to be that hot, it's not overclocked or anything, do i take the cooler off and re-apply thermal paste or something?

That would be a good start or at the minimum, clear out the dust (if there is any).

*Edit* Beaten to it! Damn phone ringing mid-post :P

8800GT's run hot. They always have done!

Although, the above advice of cleaning out dust and re-applying thermal paste is a good start for any temperature-related issues.

You could also consider putting on a new cooler if the above didn't work, it would obviously have to be a very cheap second hand bargain to justify spending out on such an old card. Depends how much sentimental value it has I guess. :D

Not that hot they dont, i had an 8800gts 640mb overclocked to the very max, and i mean to the last 1mhz stable.
and i still only got 42C idle and 67C tops.

but yes, like stated, open it, clean it, remove thermal paste, apply fresh paste, re-seat cooler...
If you want to perform a cooling mod like i did then.

I removed the junk thermal pads, cut thin bits of clean alloy to size of ram chips, thermal compounded those on. the alloy bits have to be thick enough so they touch the cooler nicely. Like the thickness of a pc case panel, but not painted, just clean alloy for best heat dissipation.

that dropped my temps a little.

defo, check the fan too.
thats some mental temps...
even under 100% load, you still shouldnt be hitting those temps.
If im correct, from owning 8800 cards in the past, i think its TJ max is 102C, the card will turn itself off altogether after 102C

It might be worth installing a couple different temperature reading apps like
MSI Afterburner, GPU-Z, OpenHardwareMonitor or AIDA64 etc.
to make sure that SpeedFan's readings aren't completely off!

I've just sold my old graphics card and I'm using an EVGA 8800 GTX atm.
On a warm sunny day like today it idles @ ~50°C and ramps up to ~67°C full load (the GPU fan is set to 80%).

i'm pretty sure it is as hot as it says it is, it's impossibly hot to the touch. the fan is moving for sure, so i'll clean and re-apply the thermal paste. ta!

did it.

bit of a pain as in the cooler there were those nasty foam "heat transfer" plasters. so i had to cover each individual RAM chip and various other components in thermal paste - only the ones which were covered by the foam stickers ofc.

anyway, net result is it's about 66idle and high 70's at full whack; it's hardly spectacular but it'll do.

Got one here that idles at 61c going by afterburner, loads in game at 75c, i was thinking of adding a second one, but the board i have has pretty tight spacing for sli, (asus p6 x58de). They could end up running pretty warm.

8800GTs run hot, since when?

I ran a passive cooler on mine while overclocked. Even with stock cooling it was silent and not what I would describe as a hot running card.

You cant compare a 8800gts to an 8800gt, iirc they are different size gpu chips, and the latter gives gave off way more heat it was made/produced much later than the original gts/gtx range.

I often saw my 8800gt touching 90-95, and theirs a lot of fans inside my case. Often made sure I had the fan setting on 70% (never used to let me put the fan any higher).

Ended up getting an ati card, just due to been fed up with how much heat they produce!
