Hi
I got a new BFG 8800gt oc a few days ago and due to my original psu failing I have used an older 400w psu with a single 12v rail rated at 24 amps as well as a 20 - 24 pin converter. Everything seems ok but when I try 3dmark 06 my asus pcprobe alarm goes off saying abnormal voltage, it drops down to 10.94 from 11.58 which is only just below the default 10% threshold marker. The 3d mark didn't stop running but I quit it because I don't know if this is an exceptable drop in 12v. I'd like to know if i can just change the threshold to 11% to stop the alarm and get on with it or if this is to big a change in voltage?
The 8800gt is supposed to need a 425w psu with 28 amps on 12v rail but it said this was with a core 2 extreme x6800, this is my spec:

A64 x2 4200
Asus A8N-e Nforce 4 ultra mobo
1x cdrw
1x dvd rom
1x 160g ata hd
8800 gt
400w ezcool psu

Thanks

p.s I also have 2gb ram (ocz platinum edition ddr 400) and 1 case fan + 1 cpu fan + 1 mobo chipset fan

Theoretically you could, but if you haven't much knowledge or hands on experience with electric components/electricity, even a software induced modification as you suggest would be questionable.

You must realise that a damaged PSU can take your whole system with it to it's electrical grave.

I understand your comment about having an AMD instead of the C2D Extreme, but the CPU difference is not noticeable over the amperage spectrum.

Your best bet is to replace the PSU, for both proper amperage, and overall efficiency.

And btw, 10.94 is awful....The worst fluxuation you should see while under a 3d application or synthetic stress testing should be maybe a .20 difference; say from 11.91 to 11.74.

There's no right or wrong answer to that question.

Probability wise, ya, luck could be in your favor (despite how flawed that statement sounds...)
PSU is the heart of a system, just like in the human body. The weaker the heart, the closer to death you are.

But what's the rush? Hell, just wait for a new GTS to come out in the first week of December. By that time you could have a new PSU up and loaded into your system all ready to go.

Playing it safe would be to not use it at all..

You do realise that '3d stuff' isn't just through games. Even running videos on Youtube will use your GPU.

so you recomend switching off and waiting until new psu get here? What psu would you recomend, I don't really want to spend a lot but upto £50 would be ok also my mobo only has one pci express slot so i'll not be needing sli.
