I seem to be having a problem with my 8800 GTX temperatures - the card seems to reach 64 deg C at idle, and 70 with a video running. According to Riva Tuner, the fans are already set to 100% for all modes.

My CPU/Motherboard temperatures are around 50, which was the case when I had a 7800 GTX (which ran perfectly fine). This card seems to run okay, but slows down quite a bit after extensive use (Medieval TW2). Does anyone have any suggestions on what is causing it to run at such high temperatures?

Read this article about half way down.

It tells you about the temperatures and what to do with rivatuner.

They say to force the cooler utilization down to 60%, whatever that means.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've just tried that and left it for a short while and it doesn't seem to have done anything unfortunately. I'll leave it a bit longer... we'll see what happens.

Hmm,

Someone with more exp of the 8800's needs to get himself on here!
I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in finding out how to manage the temps better, including me.

79C just can't be healthy, but then again, they would have known it would reach this temp when they built it. So perhaps its fine

It quite normal for a 8800 GTX to idle around 60-65C and load 80-90C. Also your better off just leaving the fan set to auto, it actually does a pretty good job and will adjust itself as needed and will actually reach 100% fanspeed quite early at around 90C so there not much chance of it overheating unless you have zero air flow..

People with 70 idle needs to check their case ventilation.

True, but not necessary, its perfectly safe. Users with 70C idle will probably be looking at around 90-95C load which again is actually quite safe.

If anyone is concerned about their temps bare in mind temps are not directly comparable, if you want to help reduce temps stick a PCI fan/air extractor under the card; they can help quite allot.

This is qouted from Nvidia Forums, it's an email to a user that was also concernd about the high temps of his 8800gtx,

"finally got in touch with BFG yesterday and got the official response:

",

Yes, this is normal and actually pretty good. Most of the test we have done
here have been with the card running at 90 degrees under load. I believe that
the Nnvidia alarm is set to go off somewhere around 130 degrees. The card can
definitely handle the heat as long as your case/CPU have enough air moving
around as well.

Thank you,
BFG Support"

That's quite amazing since I'm pretty sure my old 7800GTX didn't exceed 60°c under load... As it is now, I'm hitting 80°c under load so hopefully nothing to worry about. If anything does go wrong, I'll see how good their lifetime warranty really is.

Yep mine idles around 57-58 and loads around 75-80 so its not far off normal , just make sure your case is well ventilated and the case fans or dust filters arent clogged up with dust. :)

The review on Guru3d.com also says that even though the temps were being reported quite high, the card wasn't that hot too touch. So perhaps it may be driver related? It might not be, but then again... it might. :p

Then you don't need to worry, you only need to be concerned if its 90C+. :p

I wasn't just kinda scary how much hotter some ppl's seem to be.

Mind you I had to take my Golden Sample Gainward 6800GT apart when I first got it it was always overheating. Scared the crap outta me taking apart a £330 vid card but AS sorted it out and knocked about 15 - 20 deg off the full load temp.

With my GTS clocked to 650/2000 i just adjust the fan speed to 85% using ntune before i start gaming. Its still barely audible and stops my card reaching over 70c when playing fear. Then when i'm done i just readjust the fan back to 60% to work in windows. Those temps are fine. I found that riva tuner didn't actually do anything to the fans no matter what i tried, but i haven't read the link above, will do that now i think!

Adjusting the fanspeed should make very little difference to your loads temp as it actually does a decent job adjusting the fanspeed automatically depending on the GPU temp. In many cases doing that will probably cause the card to run hotter since it will not longer be able to reach 90-100% if it needs to.

Problem is i need to use Rivatuner or something like that get the clock speeds to stick as if i don't they return to standard after every reboot. I think the problem is to do with the .NET Framework im using as i can't upgrade to 2.0 or my music recording software stops working!

I tried just leaving the fan speed on auto as i thought it would be fine but the fan never span up properly and i think the card overheated as fear then crashed. I have a temp monitor prog installed which i check after each session so if they seem to be too high at any point then i'll readjust. But until i find a way of making the clocks stick then thats what i need to do!
