Hi All,

Currently I've been having a few problems with my 8800gt oc2. When playing games (especially UT3) the card gets to hot, locks up and I have to reboot. I have tried setting the fan speed to 100% but it still locks up.

From reading a few posts, I believe fitting an aftermarket cooler will possible fix this? I've been looking at the 'Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 VGA Cooler'

Just wondering how easy they are to fit? and everything is included when buying the cooler?

Also, I would like to fit an additional fan onto the cooler? Which one do you recommend?

Many thanks for your help :)

Joe

its easy to fit. it comes with enough ram sinks, but you need to get some thermal tape to stick them to the chips, because they just dont stick out of the box.

it also doesnt come with vrm sinks, but a couple of fans aimed at hot spots of the card negates the need for them really.

i use 2 akasa amber 92mm fans aimed at my cards, in a wind tunnel config. keeps them idling around 33, load never really over 45. 700/1750/1900

The Accelero is easy enough to fit, just do as ergonomics suggested and also buy some thermal tape, the ram sinks do have thermal tape applied to them already, but they are rubbish, so get some rubbing alcohol too to help remove the applied thermal tape. I have a 120mm 800rpm fan cable tied to the accelero and is silent, havent seen my temps go above 38c whilst playing Crysis, didnt bother with vrm sinks also.

I assume you are talking about the BFG 8800GT OC2 512? Well I am fitting the same cooler on Monday with this fan. I simply compared all the fans available from OcUK and selected what I believed to have the lowest noise / highest performance for a cheap price. I don't like paying more than £10 for a fan. What temps ARE you getting out of interest?

Heatsinked look at my post i have that card, am using a, Scythe S-FLEX 800RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 pin

Nice temps mate, that's good to know. I have chosen a different fan but hopefully my temps will be roughly the same. So joen14, what temps are you getting at the moment?

Hi, Thanks for your help. I get about 45-50 c idle and about 75+ on games. Upon testing things further, I found when doing the nvidia GPU stress test, the card locks up just after a couple of seconds. Could this be a faulty card?

What things could I test?

Thanks
Joe

A lot of cards are running that hot, some even hotter. Have you overclocked your CPU as well? If not, then perhaps it is a faulty card, in which case a new cooler would not be required. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to install a new cooler anyway, unless you want to save the money for something else.

As Sho suggested, run 3DMark06. If it completes successfully, run it a few more times just to be sure. If it crashes or freezes, it could a faulty card but if your CPU is overclocked, it may be that which is causing the problem.

You could also try installing the latest drivers if you haven’t already, or perhaps a different driver version all together. I’m using the most recent nVidia drivers without issue.

My 8800GT is a MSi 512MB @ stock setting.

With the stock heatsink fan it was idleing @ 65c, i bought an S1 with the turbo kit and some Zalman ramsinks, i bought the zalman one's after hearing good things (cost me £30 the lot) the card now idles @ 36c, yes it make that much difference.
Playing COD4 temps are around 45-50c

Good to know :) Thanks! Easy enough to fit? Are the ramsinks that come with the S1 not good enough for the job?

the thermal tape affixed to the ramsinks is rubbish and doesn't stick, use 3M tape or AS5/AS epoxy mix to attach them, but the S1 itself its brilliant :)
