Have upgraded to a ATI 4870 1GB, so i have no need for my trusty BFG 8800GT 512MB OC anymore, seeings as the prices have dropped sooo low on these cards now im not going to make much from it, so ill probably hand it over to my bro. His current system is:

Win XP SP3
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
AMD 64 X2 4800+
3GB DDR PC3200 400mhz
Nvidia 7900 GTX 512MB

If he put the 8800GT in the above system would he see much improvement over the 7900, or would the system bottleneck the 8800GT??

It will be much faster, I went from a 7800GT to 8800GT (e6300 @ 2.8) and the difference was night and day. If you or him OC the 4800+ a little bit he'll notice it even more.

You would see a great increase.
Sk.939 is still a great platform - see my sig. As long as your not worried about 3dmarks etc. Gaming will be great.

What sort of OC speed could i expect out of the 4800 then, i didnt think these were too good for OC??

There weren't great clockers... though I dread to think what that chip cost new !!

Some of the near identical opterons would hit 2.8-3.0Ghz though the 4800's were never quite so hot. 2.6 ot 2.7 should be fine though but overall the 4800 isn't a bad chip, a couple of my friends are still running X2 s939's with 8800's and they do just fine.

You won't get the max out of the card but it will be far better than the 7900

Yeah i was thinking about the 3GHZ mark. I might persuade him to have a little upgrade, get a new heatsink for the OC, and some better/quieter fans for his case, as they are getting on a bit now and becoming loud!!. Any suggestions for a heatsink??

The 4800 is the highest the x2 range went. If i remeber correctly the 4800 had an extra 1mb cache too.

He is saying you can't upgrade it to a new CPU though strictly speaking you can, the Opteron 185 is 2.6 Ghz but it would be totally pointless to do (especially given the crazy-high prices 939 CPUs still command).

X2 4400+, X2 4800+ and all Opteron 170/180 series had 2MB. The X2 4200+ and X2 4600+ had 1MB.

I'd just stick the new graphics card in and go from there.

You should easily get it to 2.6GHz which will be fine, and provide some more grunt. As people have said, the difference will be very noticable :)
