8800gt (shutdown then BSOD) what is going on?

i recently bought a 8800gt (BFG 8800gt oc) & installed it in my XP machine, consisting of a overclocked C2D 6400, 4 gb corsair ram on a gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 + a good quality quite new 600watt PSU (and im using the forceware 169.21, but the driver i installed when i fitted my card was a different forceware version, im not sure which one tho i later changed it for the current 169.21) the machine had been running faultlessley since i put it together, until now,

i dont know what the hell it is but i keep getting the following symptoms:

machine blackscreens, then quickly changes to BSOD (but the blue screen comes and goes so quickly i dont get chance to read it, like one quater of a second quick) then machine just reboots normally!

it always seems to happen when i first turn machine on, and it has just finished booting into windows, and it goes! then usually again in say 30 mins, then it can not happen again, all session,or until i put a game on, then about 30 mins in, it goes again!

there is no artifacting, or grafix problems!
apart from the problem explained, the card seems to be working perfectly, i have been checking temps, and they are never drastic (for an 8800gt) and it wont be temps because it nearly always goes when i have just booted up into windows XP!

I thought it was PSU, but it can play realy busy bits of games No problem, then just out of the blue it will go again!

also when it reeboots the windows critical fault thingy pops up (asking to send details of problem to microsoft etc) and it has the following details on it:

BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : 0000002C BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : B97D6B8F OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

And another time it had this:

also there was a few files about the error that the fault reporting thing was going to send, that i saved just in case they mean anything, one is called Mini122607-01.dmp, one is a text doc. called manifest, and the final one is an XML doc. called sysdata ?

the error reporting thing coming up leads me to (guess) that it is software based problem, (but i dont really know)???

Should i send the card back?
do you think it is a hardware or software fault?
if i send it back can i send it to overclockers? or does it have to go to manufacturer? ive only had it about a week, and it has never been overclocked!
(luckily its got a lifetime guarantee)

Hi, well 2 things come to mind here, if it does it mainly during boot i would take all your hardware back to default, no overclock just standard settings.

I would also install the new NV official drivers after useing driver cleaner to make sure you remove all the older drivers. reinstall the latest M/B chipset drivers incase they are fuber.


after you have done the above i would start looking at power issue. although a good Q PSU is being used ( what make and model please? ) is dose not mean it dosnt have a fault. under first boot the psu is a critical part, everything wants power and on an overclcoked machine the demands can be quite high. although i would say 600W would be enough it dont mean that PSU's dont fail under load.

you could try 2 sticks of memory, 1 H/drive, 1 optical drive and standard clock settings and monitor the voltages to make sure the PSU has stable voltage lines.

or as a last resort if your 100% satisfied its not a power issue you can try a format and clean install, again somtimes the OS just gets to messed up and a format/ re install can fix software issues. if the card shows no artifacts and runs fine it will be no good retuning the card becasue it will be sent back after testing and you would have lost £20 postage ect.

1 remove all drivers. useing driver cleaner
2 re install M/B chipset drivers
3 re install latest NV official drivers
4 run at default settings first makeing sure everything is stable before overclocking anything.

5 if problem still there monitor PSU voltages under load see what happens, see if they jump up and down under load.

6 final, if your happy that the PSU is ok voltages stable then its format reinstall as the last resort to make sure its not software. if after reinstall it happens again, then its hardware issue but might not be GFX card. might be memory stick failing ect. ive had a doggy H/drive give me trouble before, ran perfect for 4 or 5 days then bsd. i changed everything only to find the hardrive was the fault and 3 years later no BSD and machine still running 100% i blamed everything except the H/drive over a period of 2 weeks untill trying another drive. just goes to show hardware dosnt always fail 100% instantly somtimes it dies slowly!

good luck let us know how you get on, the above should help you on the right track for a fix.

check above before returning the GFX card as i dout it will be the GFX card.
 
I had a similar problem you describe some time back. BC codes are an indication of a corrupt registry entry.

The culprit was my memory (errors). As an additional suggestion mem test your memory also.

ok, the psu is a Tagan one with multiple 12v rails, quite pricey, and nice quality, never had any probs with the psu before, and b4 the 8800gt it was running a 7900gto (similar power consumption)
when i put the GFX card in, i also fitted a 400gb sata HDD, that i used to use in an external drive, (the room i gained from changing from 7900 gto to 8800gt allowed me to fit it in!)
also i fitted 2gb of ram at the same time! the ram that was already in was corsair CMS2-6400 c4, and the newer 2gb was the same, but the older ram was rated at 5,5,5,12 but the new stuff is rated 4,4,4,12 ??? (i dont know if this makes any difference)
the reason i thought it was 8800gt at fault is because i have seen some other posts complaining about same problem!
also it doesnt always shutdown at bootup, but usually within 10 mins it goes, it is very random, and the windows critical fault reporting thing doesnt always come on!
i might try taking ram and hdd out and trying like that for a bit!
luckily BFG has a lifetime warranty, so even if it takes a lifetime to sort i should be OK !!!!???? (and knowing my luck it probably will)
 
just checked, the old 2gb of ram that was in the machine is 6400C5, whereas the newer 2gb is 6400C4 ???
could that be the cause of this problem?
 
I would run a virus checker then run memtest on a cd from boot.There's been a few virus lately causing page faults.
Right click on my compter icon properties then go advanced/startup and recovery then at bottom untick restart upon failure then you will get the static BSOD screen.

Run antivir classic got loads of page faults a while back turned out was a virus and not my memory if clear run memtest 86.
 
Hmm I have been having similar problems.

Built a brand new PC 2 packs of 2x1GB mem sticks Corsair C4 ram, 8800GTS, ASUS P5K-Premium and other bells and whistles

On the occasion my PC hangs, restarts, BSOD. Not often and has thus far only happend while GAMING! I thought it was a GFX error but now after reading this post I'm thinking memory issues.

Will try mem test when I get home.

It is definatly not the PSU that im absolute sure of. It is a Corsair 520w that I have had in my last build and it is absolutly amazing, no problems with that.

turns out my system wasnt too keen on having the 6400 C5 (2GB) and the 6400 C4 (2GB) running together. (my stupid fault really i should have double checked the type of memory that was already installed when i got the new corsair 2 gb sticks! for some reason i thought it was corsair XMS2 6400 C4 already in my machine, SILLY.!!!!!!)
anyway ive took the C5 sticks out, and bought another 2GB of C4 to go with the C4 i got in there now!)

Mem tested my PC last night. 0 errors. I posted in another thread my results with someone having the same issue with the same model card as myself (8800 GTS) we both have 0 errors from mem test but the issues persist.

Although I had no problems last night gaming. It has to be a faulty driver as there is lots of posts here on the forum about random lock-ups and issues.

EDIT: sorry to hijack the thread.
