8800GTS 70C??

Hey,

Got my rig all together and its running pretty smoothly.. but i've just downloaded ntune...

Opened it, looked at the temperatures @ it was at 70C :confused:

isn't that a massive amount? I haven't overclocked it at all. Is there something wrong with it? it does feel pretty hot.

Mind, I dont have any system fans as its a pretty old case.

So is it normal? cheers

just to say I havent been on any games since boot so yeah, its on idle 0 although its gone down to 60 C now... doesn't look like there's an GPU fan speed indicator though.

My bfg oc2 idle at around 51deg, according to ntune

really? seems too hot heh.. Running at stock temps too.

I put a small house fan thingy directed at it.. gone down to 470 C now... I should really really get a new case.

47 degrees is good, 70 degrees is way too hot for idle, my load was around 77 degrees with my 8800GTS 640 overclocked to 650/2.2

yep that's what it was at (although it did start going down)... I put this house fan thingy on it.. thats why it's gone down I guess.

If the card is running the way it should be, why should you be concerned about temps?

if its 70 degrees idle, whats it going to be at load...? very hot, and that can shorten the cards lifespan been in the 90's when gaming.

the fact his idle was 70 degrees at first was a matter for concern, since thats load temps.

Yep, with the expansion due to heat = a lot of stress etc.

I also thought the fan might not be working as it is insanely quiet.. (could have been my old PSU tho).. I had to put more light on the fans to see if they were actually moving.

I remember the first 8800GTS I got, I had it in, and I turned the PC on, and looked at the fan, and it wasent moving :eek:

, before that I forgot to plug the PCI-E connector in and the card was screaming, in the end I thought, omg, its dead, even took it out of the pc, in the end, the problem was, I did not wait long enough for the fan to spin up, when the PC gets turned on it takes around 3+ seconds for the fan to spin up in my PC.

What case you got? I've got a pretty crap case and it dont even have any 120mm fans in it, I think that the best thing would be is to try with no side of the case on?, I tried that and my temps lowered quite abit, well on the CPU at least, dont know about the GPU, I think i lost a couple of degres on the core.

8800gtx's idle at around 70C unless they are WCed or using an after market cooler. mine was 70C idle/90C load.
On water its 40C idle 50C load.

What case you got? i've got some terrible grey old thing that came with my Advent PC 5 years ago.. 2 mounts for fans but they're incredibly small and in stupid positions.

Just come off Doom 3 and it's at 56 C now - idle? but, in Doom 3.. the performance was pretty bad.. ultra high 1024 X 768 - AA X 16 - in the first room - where you get off the ship - it went down to 30 fps :eek:

I dont know if im being paranoid.. but that doesnt seem right..

and finally, how do I check my GPU Fan RPM?

Don't use Doom 3's ultra high setting on a GTS320 (edit: not with AA set to x16 at least). Ultra uses uncompressed textures that'll be overflowing your video memory. AFAIK there's no difference from high, except it runs a lot slower.

As for temps, my GTS320 is quite happy idling around 66C and peaking at 83C under load.

Not really. My GTX idled at 69-70c last night. I monitored the load temperature and it only went up to 79-80 during a heavy gaming session. But then I suppose I do have the GTX which is a tad hotter than a GTS/2900

Oh I see what you mean.. ive just come off the Timedemo1 and the results weren't very good... Tomshardware shows 180fps.. mine got no where near on the same settings... it skipped a lot as well.

GTX's must run a lot hotter than GTS's, my GTS at 650/2.2 idled at around 55 degrees most of the time and load was 77.

Okay..

I changed the settings to high, 1024 X 768, 4 AA , v sync off etc

like around 60 fps in the timedemo... im sure my 6800 NU beat that =|

70C is nothing to worry about. 3d Video cards have been running hotter than that for ages.

Load temps are of more concern anyway.

70 degrees for an 8800GTS at idle is not normal unless cooling is extreamly bad, like no fans and super clogged with dust...
