Hi, I got a new 8800GTS from ocuk and it wont post. I turned on the pc and the gfx card fan spins but nothing comes up on the monitor, not even the bios info etc.

I bought a new 650w psu to go with it, I installed it into one of ocuk's value systems I think the MB is a K8M890:confused:. Im not sure but i think the system has onboard gfx.

Any ideas? been out of the pc building loop for a long time. If I cant sort it out maybe theres a chance the card is faulty and i'll send it back but i really dont want to if poss.

Should've done some research before you ordered. Your motherboard has one of the VIA chipsets that only supports PCIe 1.0a and isn't compatible with some newer graphics cards that support up to PCIe 2.0, like your 8800GTS.

so what your saying is i cant slap a 4870 in my board cos its version 1.0a. can antone confirm this please

edit : just got this off amd site all it requires is a 16 lane slot it doesnt say anything else that i can see

The PNY GeForce 8800 GTS 512 comes in a tame (by today's standards) black box with green and blue highlights. A large red badge at one corner clearly states that this card is made for PCI Express compliant motherboards, a warning that probably is a bit outdated in that almost all enthusiast-class cards released in the past few years have been PCI-e based. What is missing from the note is that the 8800 GTS 512 (and 8800 GT) are both PCI-E 2.0 compliant boards. The 8800 GTS 512 will run in PCI Express 1.0 slots as well, however, so don't throw out those older motherboards just yet.

just found this as well must admit its made me feel a bit better as im about to slap a 4870 or x2 in to boost my system for another year . like skyboat says do plenty of research befor commiting your hard earned cash . hope this has helped people with old boards like mine

cheers

sorry to keep posting but robert2k does your pc start up but no picture if so it may require a bios flash do a search on another pc or put your old card back in

cheers

You can flash the 8800GT/GTS 512s with what's called a GEN1 bios. Basically, it sets the default PCIe version to 1.0 instead of 1.1/2.0 and allows it to boot up properly in the older VIA motherboards that have this problem.

The caveat is that you need to put the card in a working compatible motherboard to even flash it, before putting it back into your own. Not that great unless you know a few mates with enthusiast hardware too.
