Right, I can't keep up with the latest gear with Graphics cards.. so I need YOUR help!

I have a 8800GTS 640mb and play on a Dell 2007WFP at 1680 x 1050.

I want to play Call of duty 4 and Crysis on high settings.

COD4 demo - full everything - ran smoothly - looked great.

Crysis demo - latest drivers made this run at 20fps and looked good after some tweaking.

So, if I was to replace my graphics card - Would I see a performance increase if I bought a 8800GT? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-041-EA&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008

I don't want to spend over £270 (including money made on selling my current card).

What's all this news of a NEW 8800GTS?  Help appreciated. If not, I will just wait till the 9900 comes out?

pretty much...certainly nothing worsth spending £260 on!!

the 8800GT is slightly faster than the 640GTS in a few games, but by like 3-4% max.

why not just look at some review websites and make your own mind up? that way you can be happy with your own decision, rather than deferring it to someone else?

Its not deferring at all, its asking for a better opinion with a more currently up to date knowledge on graphic cards and their performance.

Evidently I must still be up to date with performance and ask again when I will receive replies like "OMG your still in the stone age, wow nearly as old as AGP" - then upgrade.

Is there any talk of a replacement to the 8800 series yet? eta?

I went from a GTS 640 to GT & also have the same monitor as you, I think its very much worth it. Noticble improvment in general frame rate & I find the GT quieter.

Thats what I wanted to hear. But I think I might hold off till a graphics card can handle Crysis in Vista in DirectX10(.1) and all eye candy before buying Crysis.

The GT is GTX performance, its much faster than the GTS.

No point holding off for a card that will run Crysis with all eye candy as you'll be waiting about 2 years, as thats how far Crysis is ahead. :p

I have a GTS 640, and a GT, not a lot in them, mind you, my GTS was clocked to high hell :D. Wait for the "new" GTS, see what that can muster firstly i say.
