I used to get 65c idle on my 8800GTX now its up to 73c and it sounds like the fan is going at full pelt too. I hardly played any games on it at all.

I will play games when I install vista, but whats the crack here?

I don't know, you'd better give it to me :D

I know these card's shouldnt be that high @ idle, maybe your heatsink has bad contact with the core, or there's dodgy/not enough/too much TIM on it

It used to be quite all the time now, its making a right bloody racket. The fan on the card, would start up 100% then die down.

I'm confused, but I'll give it a blast of some compressed air.

Yeah cheers I'll take a look in there... this is all I need. Im gonna install vista x64 tomorrow.

Blades seem fine.

I just took the side of the case out and its down to 63c gpu now according to everest/riva tuner.

Can anyone tell me, what sort of rpm the fan on a gtx should be at on idle?

I think its quietned down a bit now... bizzare.

I hope not... I noticed the fan has just kicked in higher now, that i gone into rivatuner. Yet cores only @ 65c?

Just wondering why its suddenly decided, to start increasing the fan speed all of a sudden?

If you took the side of your case off and the temps dropped then it's probably case flow that's the issue and not the GFX card.
Do you have decent air flow through the case?
1 Fan in and 1 fan out?

Great advice

And what are you going to do when he gets his new one and the exact same problem happens to that one?

Tell him in another single worded post to 'rma'?

OP:the problem is your case airflow, mainly the flow through the expansion slot area, for some reason the 8 series have internal vents so they dump the heat back in the case, may i advise an akasa pci slot blower fan sitting right next to your 8800?
Works wonders. :)

ouch im getting 72 degrees on mine under load

8800GTX as well... ok how bad is that?
My 8800GTX has gone as high as 76 under load (with AA and anisotropic set to max) but that's no problem from what I've read. These cards are good up to 100 degrees. It idles around 64.

To the original poster, 73 at idle sounds a touch high, but depends what it's rising to under load...

ok thanks for the advice although 76 degrees in a pc seems scarily high

ive just taken the case apart and moved one of the hard drives away from the fan to see if it helps
