8800GTX @ 73c idle.

I have an Antec P180 case so it has decent cooling, 2 rear exhuast fans but maybe I need ine in the front as well.

I'll have to see about improving air flow. I'll get one of those akasa blowers on the job too. :)
 
Checked thermal paste has been applied/even coverage? My ATI X1900XT applied paste was pretty shoddy job, not a total coverage of the core at all.

Well if there's something wrong with the card and it's running hotter than it should, then the card is at fault. Obviously air flow will affect the temp of any card or component. Normal idle temps for an 8800GTX are around the low to mid 60's. Anything way above that, regardless of airflow unless you have your card in the midst of a cable jungle and other components, would indicate that the card may be at fault. Depends what load temps are though. Also, would like to know what he's using to get those temps and if he's tried more than one programme to get that reading.
 
thats quite right. my 8800gtx idles at 65/66c which is pretty much the norm. my fan stays at 59%. even pushing it to the limits i've not heard it spin up, ever.

there is no reason for the fan to spin up at idle if the idle temps stay in the mid 60's, and certainly airflow isnt one.
 
the nvidia drivers (using ntune) and everest ultimate editon 2006 both give the same readings:) everest reads the temp, but not the fan speed. ntune does both. setting the fan manually to 100% brings the idle temp down to 55c at a push but it is very audible.

Yeah ive ordered two of those blowers, just in case. I might try running with the side of the case see if the temperatures are different.

I noticed after quitting medieval the temps where 76 and looked like it had been quite a bit higher before that ouch.

I have a wavemaster case and I have tidied all the cables out the way of the airflow. Originally I had a hard drive part covering one of the two in fan areas, thats moved.

So two fans in have a direct route onto the graphics card fan area. Problem I can see though is that outlet on the top of the card. There isnt much space between the top of the card and the side of my case. The side of my case gets nice and warm right where the graphics card dumps its heat strangely.
Plus the other big airflow hindrance in there is a titan amanda which again goes all the way across the case.

If by removing the side of the case I notice an improvement I will create some vent holes in the side panel. I have been itching to try out this new Dremel and its a good excuse to see if I can make nice tidy holes in Aluminium. ;)

I will get it to dump all the heat outside the case even if it means some interesting redesign work on the case itself.

I have that case and an 8800 GTS, and you definitely need a fan on the front grill. Drops all idle temps nicely.
 
Those Akasa blowers are mighty cheap so I guess worth a try, but still, any temps under 100 at load are nothing to worry about for the 8800. I'd be interested to know what kind of dent these blowers actually make on the temp though...
 
If you've got a P180, try moving the 38mm deep fan from the bottom PSU chamber to the front intake and move your HDDs to the bottom cradle, if they aren't already. Did it on mine as the PSU wouldn't fit with the deep fan in place so moved it to front fan mount in the motherboard chamber, gives good airflow even on low speed.

That's a good idea.
 
Cheers all,

I already have my hard drives in the bottom chamber, with the fan next to them sucking air out. I need to or the drives get pretty hot. I bought a system blower although it wasnt akasa and cant use it cos its far too noisy lol. Maybe akasas are better?

I'll have to try and move fans around, as suggested. ;)
 
I think the air vents I *cough* added to the side panel are helping. Now I have these Akasa blowers Ill put them in later and see if it gets any better.
