8800GTX + Armed Assault

I see. Thats kinda weird tho cause the latest CPUs out now, none reach the stock speed of 3.4Ghz. So the only way to maximize the full usage of 8800GTX is to OC the cpu to 3.4Ghz. So in a way is Nvidia making comp users void intel warranty just to accommodate to their G80 series

I hope the Ati R600 won't have the same need, if not I have to OC my X6800. O well, back to trial and error of Ocing.

These cards run perfectly blaseing fast even on dualcore`s @2.6-2.9
and they will be even less cpu overhead when DX10 games and the drivers mature....

No one forces you too overclock.

But sticking a 8800 GTX in a conroe system running a stck 6300 is maddness.

Ye, I know but the OC is kinda an indirect force making you do it you see? Cause you know in order to get full usage out of the 8800, then you will be thinking " What the heck, I will just oc it " ;p

Ok , after a bit of OCing I can run my e6600 @ 3.2 Stabily
Has anyone else downloaded this game and tried it on a 8800GTX ?

This game looks to be the one to put your 8800 thru its paces , on open
country scenes the fps is good , but it still starts to struggle on built up areas.

Maybe I should have considered getting 2 x 8800GTX in SLI
Or would I have been better off getting a faster single core processor?

ArmA is a beast of a game, just as OP' Flashpoint was/is. OFP came out 5 years ago and still strugles to run on most pc's. The amount of textures and details in this game is huge, depending on what view distance you have set. Have you seen how big the islands are?? It takes ages to get across them even in the choppers. Which version have you got, Czech or German?? There is a patch out for the German version that increases performance.

I agree with naffa,

That GTX needs at least 3.4ghz to show its true colours.

8800 GTX's need nice fast conroe to allow them to breathe.

Fact..

what complete and utter tosh

Taking oblivion as an example. The difference between a stock 6600 and 3ghz Core 2 X6800 is approximately 10 fps. Thats a difference of 0.8ghz for 10fps. Hardly what id call "allowing it to breathe"

The gap widens with

3.4ghz- 3.8ghz

3ghz for a conroe is relatively slow.

Do more research.

BTW a rubbish example to prove a point that i know is right.

My E6600 at stock is plenty powerful for my 8800GTX.
Playing Oblivion at 1600x1200, 16xAF, 8xQAA, HDR, I get ~60fps outdoors. My 7900GTX never came near that.
With my E6600 at 3.2Ghz, I only gain about 5-6fps.

Ive downloaded that. Its still pretty buggy if it does have the patch. I tried installing it and it says I don't have the right cd/dvd installed everytime I want to play it after. I should have waited for the UK release :(

Yeah everyone I know who has the german version is complaining about the crappy frame rate. Its not just you.

Yeh there are lots of reports of a 10-15 fps slowdown on the German version over the Czech one. Its all to do with the Securom copy protection used in the German version. The Czech one uses Starforce and runs a lot better. The 1.01 german patch restores the lost fps and also fixes a few bugs. It can be downloaded here:http://www.morphicon.de/stuff/arma/Arma_GermanPatch_101.zip

The original operation flashpoint was always a pain in its day. Hasn't been till recently that machines can run it smoothly.

....well a pain until 2-3 years ago anyway, but thats not really recent.

Its like 5 or 6 years old now isn't it!!!

....happy times

I have heard that the game was badly coded and rushed to get out... due to the developers not wanting the game to look dated if they had made waited and made it better... I know that there will be a number of patches out to sort the frame rates out so its not your hardware but the coding in the game...

How about you take a look at http://www.overclockers.com

Look at the FEAR performance scaling with a Conroe\8800GTX article ;)

I know it isn't like that for all games, but I'm pretty sure FEAR is highly dependent on the CPU but its an interrsting read. :)

Seriously, its the security software that they stuck on the german one. thats it. no other copies of ArmA have it. Which is why I'm waiting for the US or UK one.

The security software is an ass.

Go here to this ArmA tourney that's run by some mates of mine and ask some of them.
