8800gtx dissapointed with performance

Just upgraded from 7900gtx and to be honest I have seen no real performance increase in the games that I am playing at the moment.

Stalker frame rates still get killed with Dynamic Lighting on, I thought the 8800gtx would eat it for breakfast.

Oblivion runs the same as with the 7900gtx, I thought with the 8800GTX I could max it out no problem.

Nice boost in CS Source stress test 239fps upto 294fps

Could it be my e6600 stock limiting the games?.

Running at 16080x1050, surely at this res it shoudln't be CPU limited?

My card is also running @ 68-70 idle & 80 load, this ok?

Cheers.

Try re installing Windows, the 8800GTX should play everything totally maxed out including stalker easilly since an 8800GTS can.

Try 3dMark06, you'll know by the score if there are any major problems.

You definately need to do a full uninstall of your drivers - safe mode, driver cleaner, search out Nvidia driver files and delete them manually.

Then start over. I've never used a 7900gtx, but I would have thought you'd get significant gains, I could be wrong.

What AA and AF settings did you use with your 7900GTX and now with your 8800GTX ??

I would think you can use 16xCSAA now with about the same performance as 4xAA with a 7900GTX, that together with the much improved AF quality should give you a much better IQ.

The 8800 GTX walks all over the previous gen. cards mostly in terms of performance, Eye candy will come later during this year.

TBH, Stalker was a bit disapointing, it brought nothing new in terms of eye candy to the table. Also it doesnt really seem optimized.

You should be seeing around 17500 in 3m05

No AA or AF.

I have just changed over with the new card and installed the same drivers 97.73.

I have also tried 158.22. Same settings in all games.

You should really be using the 158.22 drivers. Much better performance for the G80 cards.

Did you use Driver Cleaner to remove the old drivers?

The performance was even worse with the 158.22's especially in Stalker.

97.73 gave exactly the same fps in Source.

I didn't use the cleaner, never have.

I am at work at the mo so I will 3dmark tonite.

Definately something wrong there as as said above the GTX eats through everything, i play Oblivion maxed out 2xAA/16xAF +HDR on and SuperSampling in 1280x1024, runs amazing, outdoors i get between 44-60fps (v-sync on), and Stalker runs amazing to maxed with full dynamic lighting, that gets about 46-60fps (v-sync on), but it only drops to about 46 for split seconds while the floppy disk icon comes on to load bits in, its normally doing about 50 odd to 60fps, and thats on a 320mb GTS with an E6600 all stock.

Im using the 158.22's as well btw, about the best drivers, fantastic performance and run all games great. :)

I play Oblivion all maxed and 16xAA/AF + HDR with my 8800GTS and never lag :s, how come your only play with low AA/AF and get those fps? I am gonna try Quarls Texture Pack 3 tonight, buy its like 2GB

No AA/AF means you are system limited so even with SLI'd 8800GTX cards you will not see a big difference.

You really need to use 8xCSAA/16xAF to see a difference in speed.

That says it all, you definitely have a problem. Just look at the benchmarks and you'll see that a 8800GTX completely destroys the Geforce 7 in Oblivion.

Personally, I'd format and reinstall windows, installing all the latest drivers and ensuring all the graphics control panel settings are configured properly. Other than that you should run 3dmark06 and check against other people with similiar specs.

I agree.

I just went from an overclocked, custom cooled GX2 (equivalent to a pair of 7900gtx's in SLi) with an e6600 @ 3.2ghz to a GTX @ stock and e6600 @ stock and the latter destroys it!

You should see a massive difference!

Oblivion runs very nicely on my system with Qarls Texture Pack 3. I still get some occasional stuttering but that's just down to it accessing the hard drive.
Stalker runs with no apparent slow down with dynamic lighting on.

Definitely post some 3d mark scores

at 1680*1050 without AA or AF the difference between a 7900GTX and 8800GTX will not be very big.

But it is a good idea to run 3DMark'05 and '06 and post the results so we can see if it is system related.

Yeah as your GTS is overclocked, plus anymore AA with supersampling kills it massively, supersampling is a huge, huge hit above 2x AA. :)
