I dunno if I'm doing something wrong here, but I've just moved from a 3400+, 1.5Gb RAM, 74Gb raptor, 6800U running WoW at 1680x1050 4xAA to the same but with a Q6600 and 8800GTX (eVGA one more or less at Ultra) on a whole new rebuild. I've got triple buffering and vsync enabled. In Shattrath it still shudders badly when entering a busy area and the fps drops below 30 often (the 6800U would drop to 15). Flying through Zangarmash (all settings at max) it's in the 40s with no particular activity that would bring it down (i.e. no other characters on screen).

What is anyone else getting? I'd hoped that on this archaic engine I'd be getting a solid 60+fps all the time. I'm not getting the impression that the quad core + GTX is eating the WoW graphics engine at all.

Do you still only have 1.5gb ram?

If so that could well be your problem, there was a feature in pc gamer this month about how much ram wow used.

I run the same with the same stuff as you basically, expect 8800gts 512 and full aa/af in game and its smooth as silk.

That said, it could be that same archaic engine being the cause, cause it wont be taking advantage of new GPU tech, or just plain unoptimised for more video RAM.

Hi,

I upgraded from a ATI 800XT PE to ATI 1950Pro and saw a big increase in a number of games but WOW was not one of them.

In WOW I saw no increase in frame rates all all, still runs sub 30s in IF and shatt etc, and like the above post said I reckon its down to the game engine.

Have to say mate, whole heartenly I recon it's ram,
4GB of ram for a gamer is crucially important when running Vista.

My spec in sig i'm getting 60FPS constantly with everything turned up high at 2560*1600 resolution, definitely more ram mate, it's surprising just how much difference 4GB makes compared to 2GB in vista.

WoW needs 1.5GB of ram to itself to maximise performance really. Any lower and you do notice a big differance in populated areas.

I play with the specs below and its runs 60 fps at 1680x1050 max settings with AA at 4x

In shattrath when mounted and flying over the city it dips to about 50fps, everywhere else its 60ish or higher.

I think something is wrong with my comp then.. because in busy parts of shattrath fps can dip to 20ish :/ - average normal play tbh is like 50 at most.
thats at 1680 x 1050 with AA at 2x... :(

after writing in this thread, i starting to have a little search in google. and it seems quite a few people with 8800 cards are having problems.. but also some people with the same cards are fine.. its very odd.

Agreed with many other people here. 4gb of ram is essential for gamers and wow is a complete memory hog.

Sorry I should have stated that I've moved up to 4Gb RAM as well. WoW takes advantage of 2 of the cores on the CPU. I actually got it to drop below 20fps a few times recently in busy areas. Changing levels of AA has zero effect on the frames. Maybe I should try for 3Ghz on the CPU and see if that helps.

Dont worry about it, its got nothing to do with your machine, a few patches ago they did 'something' to Shatt which was supposed to allow people with rubbish connections/machines to load up the area faster, as a by-product it capped the fps that people with good connections/machines could get. I get 30-40 in Shatt and 60-80 everywhere else so.

i have just updated to 169.21 and that helped fps quiet abit. a lot more stable now. does feel a lot more smoother. i was on 169.02.
that might help you.

RAM is quite possibly the issue there dude. My WoW uses around 1.7GB although Im on 64bit vista. Running Q6600 G0, X2900xt, 4gig of ReaperX. Game runs at 1680 x 1050 with everything maxed, in windowed mode at about 70fps with a movie running on the other monitor.

He has already said he has gone to 4gb :p

Turn off/or make sure Smooth Mouse option is turned off!

I have an 8800 gtx, 2 gig ram, and a 4400+, the game runs at 1920 x 1200 and I get between 80 - 160 fps.

Before I turned Smooth Mouse off I was getting 20 - 60 fps ( the 60fps was an absolute maximum )
