my hd5770 died. and while i wait 3 weeks for one to be replaced a friend has two gtx's laying about. i cant do with out a pc as i have stuff on ebay.

apart from the gtx running 55watts more per card what kind of performance drop/rise will i expect, should i expect to play games at the same rate?

as its a strange comparison i cant find nought on the net only single gtx v hd

cheers

surpising. might have to stick with the sli set up if it proves good. could always chuck the hd in my upstairs pc..

trying to find a sli cable/bridge near me is impossible, and being thursday late afternoon, looks like ill be waiting till next week!

would i need one or two bridges. ive seen pics with one and two cables.

also on the topic, should my 500w 30a psu hold up or should i also order something bigger,

No. Don't SLI the 8800GTX with that 500W PSU. I would suggest you just use a single 8800GTX to tide you over till you get your replacement from RMA. A 8800GTX is only slighting slower than a GTX250/HD4850 512MB, and at times as fast because of extra VRAM at high res (i.e. 1080p/1200p) in some games.

well he has got a 750w corsair psu hes not using among other things,. i know he would part with it, if the sli will prove better then i would certainly prefer that, if the 500 w one wont handle it then thats fine, im going to his later to collec the two 8800's which hes practically giving me.

so would i need one sli bridge or two?
its the only thing he aint got

If you can get the Corsair 750W, then SLI the 8800GTXs should be fine. And for SLI two cards you should only need one SLI bridge.

Just checking...your motherboard is this one?

cool. would love to tri sli!
lol...and where are you gonna fine the 3rd 8800GTX? And I think 3 8800GTX would heat up the inside of the case quite a bit :p

Wish I have a friend who got a Corsair 750W and 8800GTX lying around which I can have. While I do have a 9800GTX+...having a 8800GTX card would be nice too, since it was such an iconic and great card that some people still uses today, despite bought it years ago :D

lol, oh hes crazy mate, hes got loads of stuff hanging about, hes ebay name is needforspeed2525. he will only put things up if he really has too, he chops and changes with his system set up so much its all he spends hes money on, he has to have the latest out, were as me the q6600 is really good enough for me even running at a slow 3ghz.
still i think he has other psus, so ill just grab the best one,

what are the wattage and ampage req's of the 8800gtx

You should remove the ebay link. Pretty sure it is against forum rule :p

Use this to work out your system power consumption:
http://www.antec.outervision.com/index.jsp

I did a quick check that even assume the Q6600 overclocked to 3.8GHz using 1.5V vcore, five 120mm LED fans and other standard hardwares, the system power consumption with two 8800GTX in SLI is still under 580W.

sorry about the link ill take it off.

as for power, i have a q6600 at 3.0 and one hard drive and then of course 2 8800 gtx, my system is minimalistic as i hardly game and more so used for fast internet

You can run sli without the bridge, or untill you can source one. In my experiance this only represents a 10% performance loss at the most.

8800GTX must have 30 amps or it will complain/run unstable.

SLI 8800GTXs would not run properly in my old PC with a 750W PSU and it had 56A, so the really do need a beefy PSU.

he dosnt have the psu any more, shame really, any other psu that are compatable?
that i can find on flebay, the corsair is one option but wondered what others there were

750W Corsair would do the job nicely, you could probably get away with a 650W one aswell, but that system in full wack I am certain will pull more than 580W. As for the performance, well there will be plenty of it with that setup.

The only other thing is that 8 series GPUs seem to have a high fail rate approaching the 2~3 year mark, i think it comes down to the batches and bad luck. The oven trick can usually fix the manufacturing defects though.

Not really, I used the Antec calculator with extreme scenerio such as Q6600 at 3.8GHz with1.5V vcore and it was pulling just under 580W with the 8800GTX SLI...his system with a Q6600 only overclock to just 3.0GHz won't pull close to as high as that.

There's most likely something wrong with your previous 750W PSU not able to run 8800GTX SLI, may be because it was a generic PSU, or a faulty PSU or a PSU that's on its way out.
