8850GX2

I remember reading about this a while ago, can't find the article though. It was 2 8800GTS's not GTX's and was supposed to be released when the 2900XT's got released. Obviously not true :).

exactly, so wouldnt the 8850GX2 be 2 8800GT cards. it would make more sense than 2 8800GX2 cards.

just like it was with the 7 series:

7950GX2 > 7900GTX > 7900GT

so for the 8 series:

8850GX2 > 8800GTX > 8800GT

Not really as the 7900GT had the same amount of piplines etc to the 7900gtx.
While the gt has different amount of stream processors to the gtx.

We may never know though.

Since it only uses one slot, would that mean it'd be like SLI but without the SLI compatibility issues a lot of games have?

No... it may only be a single slot - but it still uses the SLI techniques to get the cores working in tandem and requires an SLI motherboard (yes, even if you're only running one GX2 card in one PCI Express slot, you still need an SLI motherboard).

if only they did not buy 3dfx sli would be perfect now and tbh they were in business so long how hard is to create decent drivers its like 10 years...

i think graphics cards are really underdeveloped they should have been in this stage like 3 ~4 years ago. its my opinion

I don't think that's correct.

I'm sure one of the "advantages" of the GX2 card is that it doesn't require two slots, nor does it require an SLi board.

Only a few mobo's worked with the 7950GX2 apparently, probs same with the 8850GX2 if it will even exist.

It also works with a lot of motherboards - ok there are some that don't support it - but they are the minority instead of the majority... mine has worked fine in a variety of 965, 975 boards, worked fine on the 680i and also works fine on the P35.

Obviously there are a lot more boards than that that support it, but from the list I think it's pretty safe to say that if you have an nForce4 or newer nVidia chipset, or 965 or newer Intel chipset, you're pretty safe.

Even some of the older chipsets support it on certain boards, I know that with my Asrock Conroe 945G-DVI they released a BIOS specifically for 7950GX2 support.

Mine worked fine in a 975 board, great little card until I pulled a resistor off it after a few beers

I'm assuming its either going to be 2x 8800GTS type GPUs or 2x 8800GT - my point was I wouldn't pay more than £400 for it if that was the case - but if they decided to put a couple of ultras in there tho unlikely I would.

If the GX2 is on its way then it seems to be set for january and rumored to be two of the new 65 nanometre 8800GTS with either 512 or 640 mb.

Nvidia's new year's line ?

8800gt
8800gts
8800gx2

With the 8900's to follow after some milking or competion from ATI.
