8GB vs 16GB - Really?

Dunno, Ive had 16gb for the last 4 years, but only because it was a good deal at the time. £45 isnt bad since the memory prices skyrocketed a while back.

Yea, after the natural disaster, the tsunami, prices have slowly crept down as factories have been rebuilt.

Maybe my sig does need an update....

I'm on 8GB (+) ram use with just games like Cities: Skylines on. With GTA5 I was well in the 10gb range before.

I can manage 6gb ram use when just ''working'' on the pc ( browser, IDE's like VS, mail, utilities, etc).

Anything ''free'' is used for caching, I don't see why people think it's pointless, if anything 32gb should be the way to go.

I turn my pc on from standby and my last used games are all cached and load much faster, and that's with just 16gb ram...

8GB ram is enough for GTA 5, but it means a lot will get chucked out you want to keep in, like all the browser windows/tabs and everything you run in the background.

Ummm, aside from GTA complaining about memory restriction, not really... Hence I'm thinking it might not be worth.

what's your page file size ? I've had memory warnings on arma 3 and it's set at 6gb I have 8gb it was just a windows page file related false flag bug imo

I thought caching was just if you had superfetch enabled ?

Arma is the only game that Crys/whines about memory for me, don't see much reason to upgrade myself, although next pc I build will have 16gb for sure.

Well GTA V uses 3.2GB of VRAM for me and 3.3GB of system RAM:

At high resolutions (1440P+) you will find that 8GB of system RAM may not be enough if you use higher quality settings in game. I close nothing down when gaming, Lightroom/Photoshop and browsers etc remain open. It's faff closing stuff down when you have enough RAM to not have to do that.

Hey, another reason for 16GB :D

So, I've been stubborn and stuck with 8GB for a while now. But last night, I played GTAV and got a memory warning, stating I was using all of it blah blah, thanks MS.

What's MS got to do with this?

It all depends on what resolution and features you have on as to what is required. As you've said 8GB memory is nothing really though it depends if you're going to use it or not.

Memory is one of those really cheap upgrades which actually does more than you may notice. If you run out of memory then you start paging to the hard disk which is slower and then it severely affects performance.

I'd say buy memory if you are going to use it - if not then don't.

No reason not to have 16GB these days.

Like you say, Windows tends to carry a bit of an overhead, and it's always nice to have some headroom.

I'm currently using 4GB out of 16 and I don't have any 3D apps open, just my 15 tabs in Firefox, but **** having to close the internet just to load a game!!

What's the rest of your rig? I've read about problems using 4 sticks with z97, I don't remember the specific details now but I'm on a 4790k with 8 gb and after reading about it I scrapped the grab an extra 8 gb plan and decided to go with 2 x 8 sticks and sell the 2 x 4 I've got.

You should Google the issue as it may be certain motherboards or something else if you're also on Z97.

16GB is the way to go.

I'm using 4GB now on my laptop with 8GB, with just Chrome open. I will be upgrading it to 16GB just like my desktop.

Running GTA V or BF4 on my PC, I can easily be using close to 8GB.

Has been mentioned already, little reason not to grab another 8gb, especially if you seem to go through new and demanding titles which as time progresses will be more likely to actually utilise it (such as the few mentioned in thread)

To be fair seeing a 980ti mentioned I'd generally assume the system to already be running with 16gb as part of some 4690k/4790k monster build so picking up some more will simply round it off and future proof you for the next several years.

Especially when games seem kinda bottlenecked, in the respect the developers can't push specs too hard or they would put the product out of reach of most of their userbase, those on lower/mid range systems, they are only now even beginning to try to scrape the surface

on Z97 here and using 4 x 4gb just because it was cheaper than 2 x 8gb at the time. No probs.

Well get this, Ive ran grid2,grid autosports and dirt rally with 1gb of memory. I wasnt expecting them to load up let alone run, but they ran real smooth without stopping and starting. I was amazed.

I've moved from 8>16 and back to 8 in my main rig, I've never noticed any performance deg in any games, even gta5.

That being said, ddr3 is still slowly dropping in price, whether or not it'll hold it's value with ddr4 being more widely adopted is another question. six and two three's really

I got 16gb with my haswell upgrade a few years ago. Great thing is you never need to worry or monitor your ram usage :)

I am 8GB and never had a warning on Ram usage. (6GB in use when the game launched and up to 7 with the memory leak) However my page file is 12 GB and my Video mem was 3.5 GB but since various updates is now 3 GB

Thats wierd how people are getting so little ram usage in GTA, mines rarely under 10gig been used sometimes as high as 12 gig used when im downscaling.

My page file usage is 10 GB when playing. Hence my upping the size of it.

I know that increasing the size has of that has fixed stutter for a number of people.

This was my usage not long after launch....
