8gig Memory

I'm thinking of sticking another 4gig of RAM in my system in a couple weeks time to be 'Future Proof' and because right now, it's really cheap. I've got a couple of questions first:

1. I heard putting 8gig in the system makes it slower, is this true and to what extent if so? (OS is Vista 64)

2. I'm currently running my memory at 1066 2.2v, if I add another 4gig (I will obviously buy exactly the same RAM) will I have to downgrade this speed to like 800 1.8v?

Thanks in advance.

I have 8GB with a 940 and it's far faster. I used Vista x64 and now 7 x64.

I can alt tab between anything with no slowdowns, even mutiple games.

Sadly with my motherboard I had to drop to 800 although I kept my volts at 2.1

Still runs amazingly well and I can get a 3.75GHz stable clock with all the banks filled.

2 gb in my system = painfully slow...well compared to mroe ram.
4gb is perfectly respectable and usable, but it takes around 1second while its starting up to load the start menu if i click on it etc.
8gb = omfg wet pants. everything loads instantly (have pre fetch and a 4gb ready boost drive) even while its loading normal start up programs etc.

i have been running @ 1600 same cas and volts with any amount of stick in the board. After i got rid of three faulty sticks :)

you might have to up the NB voltage a notch or two, or maybe the ram voltage, but it should be fine.

putting 8gb on my comp has been one of those "do I really need this" circumstance that actually paid off. I heard a lot about windows potentially running slow, or not being able to overclock as much and such but I've had neither of those problems. In fact I have my virtual memory disabled despite a lot advising me against and my system hasnever been this fast. I can have defrag, antivirus, all sorts of crap running in the background worry free knowing that the comp performance won't be compromised. I have it running 24/7 since chrismas and it's beautiful. :)

Get 8gb - it's much cheaper than most imagine.

Just out of interest, did you have to reduce your DRAM frequency or increase Northbridge voltage to get the 8Gb to "take" ? I have a similar setup - but with the P5Q Pro and Corsair Dominator memory rated at 1066Mhz.

Running a Maximus II Formula with 4GB OCZ Blade PC2-9200 @ 1200MHz fine. Can't even get a further 4GB in at 800MHz, 1000MHz, 1066MHz or even the rated 1150MHz 1.8v.

Have you checked what your peak Memory usage is?

If you hitting like 2GB to 3GB usage in your most intensive games or applications you already have your 'Future Proof'ing with your single 4GB kit.

I'm sure if you think hard you can find a more deserving place to spend your money because unless your a serious Media or virtualized dude then your just throwing money away and making your machine a bit more *untweakable* and power hungry perhaps! ;)

I dunno what is it you guys are doing that needs so much memory anyway? I got 2GB in my workstation/HTPC and 4GB in my gaming/benching machine and that is loads

What do you use your rig for?

Gaming and general use - 2 gig is more than enough. I run 2gb DDR3 and have no problems what so ever.

Intensive video editing, graphics work etc...- then more then 4gb or more is recommended.

More memory doesn't necessarily slow your system down but in applications that can only utilise a small amount of your memory, if you are having to run that memory at a slower frequency because the board can't handle the voltages then you may find some apps running slower.

More memory can cause a bit of a strain on some motherboards. Doesn't cause any damage but the extra volts required can also have quite an adverse effect on the CPU's overclock. Previous settings that were 24/7 stable may find the board unable to boot with them.

Whilst having a mad PC upgrade spree I totally forgot that I still have a ****e hard drive that is very long overdue an update so thats going to be what I'm going to go for first at least. I'm going to put the memory on hold for a later date as some of you are quite correct, I really do not need this right now at all, I'm just buying for the sake of it.

Thanks for the advise :)

Sorry to get back so late, was away somewhere North :)

No, didn't decrease the frequency, if at all I had to increase it to go from [email protected] to [email protected] :)

All I had to do was to go to BIOS, go to NB voltage and press [+] once.
