8K not the future?

My projector is 8K branded (technically it's a 4K panel, but it uses pixel-shifting to do "8K") but don't think I've found a single piece of 8K content I've wanted to watch on it (admittedly, there would be some faffing involved as unless I pay for the 8K software upgrade for my amp then I'd also need to mess around with connecting devices directly). I really wonder how much better it would look than 4K even on a 110" screen. I guess maybe in a dedicated room with a 200" screen it might give a decent upgrade, but unless I buy a new house then that isn't happening!

It feels completely unneeded. Like so many other things could be better. I don’t know.. like 4k broadcast as standard. 4k streaming at a higher bit rate..

8k is for “those” types of “tech” people.

Exactly when 4k streaming can by standard be the same quality as native 4k BluRay then we can think about what 8k brings and giving higher tier options still for streaming services. Problem is it needs basically the whole world collectively agreeing to step up everything from charging the providers with the required bandwidth for transfers accordingly and allowing that amount of data to be able to transfered standard to anyone. We are decades away from this still.

8k will be one day.
100i tv are becoming more common and once there is enough drop in price and households sits with a 8k tv 100+ inches
then there be demand.
but that is a long way away.

first 4k streaming needs to up the bitrate and sport and any other TV broadcast.
atm, the hardware needs to be updated to support that level

With nitrate, I'm sure Netflix dropped it during COVID, and I'm not sure they upped it back (more profit I'm assuming).

They've also made their codecs etc more efficient so that will account for some of it, but given the significant price premium they charge for 4K the least they could do is up the bitrate. It's disappointing to see HBO Max going down the same route when they launch next month.
