Hi there

Well this week and later this month the Porsche is getting pampered to make sure it passes next 111 point check, drop warranty on the car and well just because I want to keep it in tip top shape. So tomorrow its getting:-

1. PSE fitted and hardwired to the sports chrono, I've heard about some orange/red connector you can unplug to make it even louder, any truth to this?
2. Petrol cap seal and coolant pipe clips been replaced.
3. Then on Friday its getting A/C rads replaced, all coil packs, spark plugs and an oil and filter change. Its early as last service was only 6000 miles ago, but it makes sense to change oil more regular and might as well change all the plugs and coil packs whilst working on it.
4. End of May/Early June its hopefully going into Chris at Centre of mavity for a full GEO setup, can't wait to drive it after Chris has worked his Magic, he transformed the Mustang and Porsches are his speciality.
5. End of June 2yr OPC warranty!

So far all I've done to the car is the 997 airbox mod and BMC panel filter which has given the car a real GT3 howl in the cabin as you approach 7000rpm and made it feel more lively past 5500rpm, so very worthwhile mod and literally takes 15 minutes to do, so putting back to stock for OPC service/warranty is easy and doing with just basic screwdriver and torx T25. :)

Really enjoying the car, even on the shoddy Pirelli's grip levels are pretty unreal, especially at the rear due to the huge 295 section width tyres and once I've warn these down I shall look at fitting Michelin PS2's or some Super Sports if they get N-Spec rating.

Can't wait to get car back with PSE fitted and experience the car how it should truly sound and be interested to find more out about this orange/red connector mod for even better noise. :D

Good job, just dont forget that bloody warranty. You dont want it louder, when its on loud its plenty loud enough.

997 'Airbox Mod' entails removing a restrictor at a guess? :)

The airbox has a resonator in it that lowers drive by noise of the engine/intake.

You basically block this off and put in place a smooth silicone hose which gives improved airflow, then add panel filter supposedly it can add upto 15BHP at certain parts in the rev range and 3-4BHP or so peak, but the main aspect is the noise you get inside the cabin, really lets the engine speak on the intake side and howl. :)

Basically my airbox now looks like this:-

Except mine is a metal stopper cap as looks far better and blue silicone hose.

Here is a video which shows the installation and before and after sound change.

A cheap yet effective mod which is very easy and quick to reverse. :)
Once the PSE is added with the above mod it should sound pretty epic. :D

wow that must have cost you quite a lot, how long do you plan to keep the car for?

I've budgeted for all of this, basically the A/C rads, coil packs, spark plugs, petrol cap seal and oil change using all Porsche parts would have cost £2300ish at Porsche. I've got Mike and Sports & Classic sorting it for me for £1000 all in, that includes VAT too, he lives just round the corner from me and so he's giving me very good rates. :)

The PSE is over 2k fitted by Porsche, but I've got the Garage who sold me the car to source and fit me one and its costing me £1100 so again great price.

Shopping around and knowing specialist results in huge savings with these cars and thats not scrimping either, all Porsche parts, just Porsche charge £120 +VAT per hour labour and add some serious markup to the parts.

I basically want the car to be spot on and you don't buy such a car and then try to skimp on running cost, its a top car that demands a lot of care. :)

The warranty will be about 2.2k for 2years which is bumper to bumper and the GEO setup by Chris is peanuts in comparison at £250, but the difference he will make to it will be night and day, he's a star. :)

Thats 250 at Chris but he will find another 1500 quid for you to spend, dont worry about that :)

Also get your servicing and repairs done before the warranty starts cos it OPC prices after that :)

Chris is a good move, top bloke with 911's, he will get it straight and ship shape and if I were you I would see if you could take some rear ride height out of it, seems a bit tippy toey at the back, but that's just me, Chris will know what to do.

Fab things no? :D

What do you mean, mine sits too high at rear?

If so can ride height be adjusted on top suspension.

I know Chris really well and he's always looked after me and I know 911's are his true strength.

Yes really enjoying it, really needed the airbox mod though, having that howl has made it all the more enjoyable and can't wait to drive the car with PSE. Even been told the PSE helps free up a few horses even though Porsche say otherwise as with the OPC the gasses are only going through 2 out of the 3 chambers when its on which helps again top-end power, but all the little bits add up. :)

Am contemplating the X51 headers too as can get them for £650 direct from Porsche but seems very mixed if they help performance/sound or not really.

Ride height cannot be adjusted on the stock suspension no.

X51 headers will be a slight performance upgrade since the 997 *S* headers are lousy, in fact the stock base Carrera headers are vastly superior. As I've said to you before though, they'll give you very little if any noticable gain without sport cats to go with them and in fact you may end up losing torque because of them.

PSE's been dyno'd numerous times and shows 0 gains; it was never designed to be a performance part. It sounds superb though.

Oh and the connector you're referring to doesn't make it louder, it simply keeps the exhaust on full loud all the time, even on startup.

Might be a silly question but why are you changing the coil packs? i was under the impression you only change them when the start to break down and become faulty.

They already will be breaking down, it's an issue I discussed with Gibbo before he bought the 911. Mine needed them doing too after 4 years.

They love to crack very quickly on 911's and it's a much better bet to change them early than to wait to see what happens when they go completely.

A few guys on 6speed have dyno'd the PSE and supposedly with the switch disconnected and re-connected on back to back runs there was a consistent 5-6RWHP, its peanuts and probably not noticable but was there. :)

But like you say I want it for the noise. :D

The headers I sense might be a waste of money, as like you say some quote losses and some quote gains not worth mentioning, think you need to be pushing 390-400BHP for them to be a benefit.

What is a true and tested mod is 200 cel CATS, but thats warranty void, but saying that they are literally a bolt on and so easy to swap out its untrue, literally a 60 minute job and they give a good 20 or so horses, so maybe something I could look at later in the year. :)

the connector removal thing is different to the airbox one, the PSE deacticates between certain speeds , something like 30-45mph, doing the mod stops this

Yeah thats what I've read.

PSE off in dash, is quiet all time.
PSE on in dash is loud according to DME/Sports chrono profile but closes at certain revs.
PSE constant ON MOD, is that always on, hence why some say its louder.

Won't do any harm to play and go with what I like most. :)

4 out of the 6 are showing early signs. So it makes sense to just change all 6 and the spark plugs whilst there. :)
