I've not long ago upgraded my socket 754 system with an HIS X1950 Pro and 2 GB ram. My older games run great, but newer game demos such as World in Conflict and Medal of Honor: Airborne slow down every now and then.

I was thinking of purchasing a second hand Abit AV8 or AV8 RocketBoy motherboard (I'm lead to believe they are one of the same) and either an Athlon 64 4000+ (single core) or Athlon 64 X2 4200+.

I already have a buyer for my current motherboard and processor so it is only going to cost me around £50 max to do this.

I currently run all my games at 1024x768 as this is maximum playable resolution my monitor supports (which I'm very happy with).

Do you think this is a worthwhile thing to do and if so what processor would you recommend?

My current system specs are;
Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard
Athlon 64 3200+ (Socket 754)
HIS X1950 Pro 512mb IceQ 3 Turbo AGP
2 x 1 GB Crucial Ram
Corsair HX520W PSU

i seen about a 33% increase in performance in world in conflict going from a 2.8ghz opteron to an X2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz.

shows just how much difference a dual core makes nowadays... :)

so X2 all the way.

I went for the 4200 dual and its running 285*11 3gig air cooler evo 120 keeps things well below 50c on max so it was a good buy its a toledo not manchester.
it helps haveing so many options for overclocking on the DFI MB.

cheers

I only last week installed my first dual core, an X2 4200@ 2700 (I will clock it higher) and it has made a considerable difference in newer games that support it. With my previous 3800+ @2700 I was running Two Worlds maxed with no AA and x8AF and now its x4AA and x16AF and apart from frame rate there is hardly any hitching. Bioshock and Armed Assault have also seen a considerable increase to performance. Even single core games are running slightly smoother. It has to be the best £45 I have spent on my PC for a while.

By the way is Company of Heroes optimised for dual core and also I think I am now going to order World in Conflict?

Saguy did you format after you installed your x2?
Nope, just set the bios to default, popped it in and overclocked - no problems so far. I am a lazy lucky overclocker in that I did not even update my bios as its still v1.00. I just cranked it up to 2700 (1.4V - I think) and played a few games while keeping an eye on the temps which have not yet gone over 50 according to nVidia Monitor.

No really, the game has always run pretty good for me. Before the frames were about 25 to 50 and now even with upping the AF and AA it feels quicker even though I have not checked it. Those frames may not be acceptable to you, but for this type of game it is just fine. I heard the game was buggy, but I have had absolutely no problems other than one crash to desktop. The load appears to be spread equally over both cores.
