Hey, I am considering building a new computer, but am unsure on what socket too choose.

Obviously i'd like to go AM2, but the only thing that deters me is that I have 1.5gig's of DDR RAM that will go to total waste, and also i'd have to shell out an extra £100 on 2 gig's of DDR2 RAM.

Or could I get by with 1 gig of DDR2?

Personally I'd say go Conroe (and I'm an AMD fan!). Don't forget you can sell your old RAM to cover some of the cost of the new stuff.

Yeah, I could sell one of the gig's I guess.

Just to check, I won't be able to use my DDR RAM will I?

Yeah, i'd like to go Conroe, but with the huge delays and the apparent lack of decent boards, I think AM2 is the way for me.

agree with hades, conroe now if your upgrade is needed, or wait till late this year/early next year and see what performance AMDs 65nM chips offer in comparison to conroe, i can see A64 being on par with conroe when it gets a clock boost and perhaps one or two revisions hopefully, make the market very competative :D

Or build a stopgap cheap as chips 939 system for about the same price as a Conroe chip on its own.

Eg circa £60 for a 3200 that cost £120 a few months ago or £90 for a 3700 San Diego that cost £180 not long ago. Granted Conroe probably chews them up and spits them out but the savings could go toward a better graphics card which may be more important with loads of games (assuming you're a gamer) being graphics limited rather than cpu limited.

Also loads of 939 boards going cheap with AM2 and now Conroe out.

My descision is to get a 7300GT which will do me fine till DX10.

I will probably go AM2, considering that their is a new AMD chip out next year which is supposed to be good i guess; and getting an AM2 board now would prevent my from having to replace it in the future.

Either get a Conroe setup or a cheap(ish) Socket939 setup.

It all depends on the budget, if you can/want to spend enough to get a Conroe setup do that and if the budget is limited get a socket 939 setup with a X2 3800+

use an Asrock sata 2 939 or Asrock 939-SLI32-eSATA2 motherboard.

both are good clockers, both have a future upgrade socket to take an expansion board (which you but when you wish the upgrade to AM2 for about £18) the expansion board has an AM2 CPU socket and DDR2 sockets on it :) so you can stay with a 939 setup and use your current ram for as long as you need to without worrying about having to replace the entire board at a later date :)

And dont go conroe otherwise youl die horribly in a collision with an ice cream van and a birds custard truck. it makes me laugh when people put "go conroe, even i am and im an AMD fanboy..." your not an AMD fanboy, your not even close.
