I have a very stupid question I need to ask before buying a new mobo. If I'm not overclocking at all (too old for OC now), happily run everything at stock speed and just want a fast, trouble-free PC should I go for Intel or AMD? I remember reading people saying that Intel systems tend to be more stable than AMD's due to better chipsets? I've got my Pen IV NW 3.2 for over 2 years and it has been absolute rock-solid stable.
I've never built an AMD PC before, ever, since my first 286 :D ! Have things been improved since then? The green box that says Opteron 170 is lying silently on my table and waiting to be opened. Should I sell it and get a Pen D 940 or should I order an A8N32 Deluxe? I guess about 90% of posters here are running AMDs, are they trouble-free machines?

I have run several AMD machines and never had a problem. I don't know where you have the idea that they're less reliable than Intel processors, but it's not remotely true - not today, at least. My Opteron 170 is fantastic and I would strongly recommend you keep what you have. no one here would be using or recommending the Athlon 64s unless they were trouble-free and powerful.

People here tend to buy AMD rather than Intel because the Athlon 64s are fantastic for gaming in particular, and because you still tend to get better value for your money.

Couldnt have put it better myself. :)

AMD have had a few flaky chipsets in the past and it can still be said that Intel chipsets are very stable

Having said that though, if you get a good AMD board from the likes of ASUS they are very stable. My Via based Socket 940 ASUS board is the most stable board I've owned, Intel or AMD

The Opteron is the better CPU and the Opteron CPUs are particularly stable. The motherboard you have in mind is also a rather good motherboard so I'd stick with AMD

as good as AMD chips are, ive recently 'upgraded' from a 146 @ 3Ghz to a 920D @ 4Ghz (so far), the Intel System deffinatly feels more solid overall, obviously it is not really fair comparing a single core to a dualcore variant. These Preslers are awesome, to say the least :D

yeap the preslers are dam good cpu's, well happy with mine. iam just waiting now for the P5WDG2-WS m/board tomorow, gota pick it up. Ive striped down my PC now so ready and waiting for this 975Xi with 8 phase power circitry for even better clocks!!!!

will let ya know how it goes!

the board still fluctuates even on the Ws Edtion, so this must be an asus thing becaue not many other manufactures have this problem always seems to be asus, and anandtech are also full of crap as they are paid to write the stuff up.

8 power design makes no diffrence if the board is bugged from the very start (hardware level) cant be fixed with any bios updates

vapour matt that WS board has the same problems as the premium voltage is all over the place, once fsb gets > 240 the board will reboot and start back up if closed down.

Why did you "upgrade" and why didn't you go for AMD dual core instead of Intel's?

Now I'm total confused  Probably need to do more research before deciding. The 4MB cache is also very tempting, does the 1MB extra cache on each core make any difference in real life situation at all? What kind of apps like big cache?

The opteron dual core are clearly better than the intel 900 series. There only has been a few changes made to the 900 series over the 800 series.More of a sidewards step than an overhaul.

The benchmarks speak for themselves.

see here

" Although we did not have a retail Pentium 4 6x1 processor for review, our initial benchmark results that we recorded in October made pretty clear that there won't be any performance benefit over the 90 nm 6x0 series because there are no fundamental technical improvements. In the single-core arena, it is safe to say that AMD remains the performance king.

Looking at the dual core sector, the Pentium D 900 is able to mix things up a little bit, but it is not capable of surpassing the Athlon 64 X2's performance at all. Thanks to a 4-MB L2 cache, it can compete with the X2 in many benchmarks, but the faster X2 models remain on top. You will have to get the Pentium Extreme Edition 955 to outperform AMD's dual core top models in some disciplines, but this has to be bought at a 50% price penalty when compared to Pentium D 950"
