£40 for a cheap and cheerful card to replace an 8600GT thats (probably) overheated. Interim only until I do a big upgrade. 400W Corsair PSU in existing setup.

Geforce 9500 GT (512MB or possibly 1GB) versus Radeon 4550 512MB. Or is there another option I've not considered?

Quick opinion from someone better versed than me appreciated.

i had a 9500GT for a while and found it to be a very nice card. ran most things on reasonable settings and decent res, not had any experience with the 4550 but can say that i would seriously consider the 9500GT
 
All the ones I can find for the £40 mark are DDR2, but I think I'll go ahead and order it anyway.

9500GT 1GB DDR2 turned up today. I have a working PC, which is progress. Thanks for the advice.



One quick question though: does anyone know of a good free app that'll monitor the GPU temp and warn me if it goes higher than the parameters I enter? Would quite like to avoid a repetition, but I'm not going to upgrade cooling until I get a new case.
