i was speeding along the motorway at 2 am on my way to uni, i was not tired or had not had any alcoholic drinks.

do you lot think that doing fast speeds at this time, when the road is actually completely free is ok or is it just stupid and dangerous?

Fine, I often do a ton when ever I'm on the m5 when it's safe to do so.

I rarely ever go above 80, regardless of the conditions.......just really seems like asking for trouble to me :)

I don't think it's stupid or irresponsible - in fact, it seems perfectly sensible, you're not endangering anyone but yourself and you're hardly more likely to have a crash - especially if you feel OK at driving at speed and the vehicle is capable of it - just the punishments of being caught at such a speed are what put me off :)

I echo what Scuzi says below :D

If you were driving a car capable of handling the speed comfortably, weather conditions permitted, road conditions permitted, traffic conditions permitted and you felt 100% confident that you could handle the car at that speed even in the event of something like a blowout then it's perfectly safe.

Otherwise, it's not so safe. Just because the limit is 70mph it doesn't mean that 70mph is perfect safe yet a few mph faster is dangerous. It's all relative to the conditions amongst other things.

I have done 135 on the m11 at 3am, needless to say, i got caught and i was banned for 52days. (im saying  because it is so bad it is cool) :o

I hire cars quite regularly and drive up to Manchester in them. They are always nice motorway cruisers and I always do 100 or so traffic permitting (110 on the M6 toll). Most people in modern luxobarge cars tend to do 90 odd. I think the 70mph limit is showing its age now.

Yeah we just saw you on Sky Cops :D

Depends on your car.

If you were driving a 2002 Mercedes E320 Avantgarde, absolutely not. If you were driving a 1993 Fiesta 1.3 Friscati, don't be such a muppet :p

i'm going to add more to this thread because it was the sam journey.

when i was in a town on the way to my halls i was doing 35 in a 30.
but the main problem was, the fact that i was following a diversion and someone had turned the last diversion sign around, so i didnt know if it was left or rihgt. but i carried on an on the roundabout i was in both lanes as i wasnt sure of the exit.

the police pulled me over and were really nice about it. they asked where i was from and where i was going to, so i told them, they then asked if i had been drinking and i said no. they explained what i was doing wrong and then just sent me on my way after asking about the car and who it was registered to.

one slight thing was when i went to put my hands in my pockets, the started shouting at me! i was like "umm... okay?", but they explained the reason behind that aswell

very nice police officers, i dont expect them all to be like that but i dont know why everybody complains

oh and i was driving a peugoet 307 1.4 2004 model

Nothing wrong with that kind of speed at all if it's quiet and the conditions are good. I'd quite happily cruise at that time with another 20 or so mph on that.

In my opinion exceeding the speed limit when it is totally safe to do so (I.e. when the road is empty, you are not tired and have not had a single drop to drink) is fine.

You must be prepared to accept the punishment if you are caught though, while doing so is often safe enough, its still wrong in the eyes of the law.

we were pulled over yesterday by the local Five-O and had no problems at all (3 of us in the back of an 82 cavalier with no seatbelts) once they confirmed that the car didnt need them and everything was in check (luckily the driver keeps all the documents with him) they sent us on our way :)

im sure there are some **** out there but it seems if you dont treat them like **** they wont bite your head off

Likewise, pulled over for drifting into a junction once in the 1850, 5 people up :D....

Officer was more interested in the car and just reminded me that there could be people wondering in the road (drunk) - really nice guy, quite young too!

He was of course right too and I shouldn't have really been doing that :)
