Hi guys, im new here so be kind haha.

Basically, im having the 'black screen' bug that a lot of 9600 owners have suffered from. Incase anyone isnt sure what it is, ill explain.

At any point during a game, (could be 10 mins, could be 8 hours!) the video signals to my monitor will stop and there is just a repeating sound byte that loops. I then have to restart my comp, and it sometimes takes several attempts before the gfx card sends signals to my monitor again.

So, ive RMA'ed the gfx card and they have deemed it to be OK, now im wondering what the problem is? Have they just not picked up on the fault, with it being tempremental?

Ive read things about it being a PSU problem. But from what i can gather my EarthWatts 500W is sufficient to power it. So do i have a faulty card? or would you say its my PSU?

Cheers for any help you can give!

i've just RMA'd my 9600GT, i head it could be my PSU causing my problems so then i upgraded it to a corsair 650W PSU as recomended by people here, and still had the problems. i never had the problems with my old 7300GT and not having problems with it not that i'm having to use it again.
from what i've found on google and other forums the 9600GT's and other cards have faulty chips on them.

Yeah, its my first problem too. Oh well, ill just set up another RMA when i recieve the product tomorrow. I hope yours is sorted first time mate. Cheers for the quick response.

Bit of a long shot, might be worth checking your ram. Run memtest86 for a dozen or so passes and see if throws any errors up, best to be sure!

MiNxYyY - No, not underclocked the card but i will try it when it is returned. Any settings u could suggest?

Sweeney - I will try that, thanks for the suggestion!

LoadsaMoney - Yeah i have been using onboard sound. Why would that possible be the problem?

Only reason i suggest ram is that after a system rebuild (with different, new mobo. Due to 680i dying) i added 2gb more ram and although it seemed fine it was doing exactly as you have experienced. Ran memtest, threw up some errors, loosened the timings a little and no errors at all!

As always with hardware what works for others might not work for you, worth a try though.

As for the onboard sound, i believe some have had crashing/freezing problems with onboard sound coupled with certain graphics cards//drivers/games

Yeah ive read a few threads of people having this problem with Nvidia cards and onboard sound, id try disabling the sound and running it that way for a while, see how it goes, or updating to the latest audio drivers for your onboard (if not on them already).

Anyone got any decent links to threads regarding this issue. Ive spent hours and hours searching the net and all ive really been able to find is a lot of rubbish. Nothing decisive

Posted by someone over at Guru3D.

Try drivers prior to 177. More specifically, try 175.19 or 174.74 and see if the problem goes away. Nvidia drivers after 175 cause dpc latency on a lot of boards. Gigabyte intel chipset boards are well known for this issue. Download and run this app http://www.thesycon.de/dpclat/dpclat.exe with your current driver. If the bars spike into the red area drop back to a 174 and 175 driver and see if it drops down into the green area.

Could be something to do with that.

Well, ive recieved the card back. First gaming session, 20 mins in. *poof* it happens again! metamorphpwner please could you post in here what the result is from your RMA?
