9600GT much better than 8800GT?

As the title says ... :) I bought a 8800GT not long ago, is it worth trying to send it back and getting a 9600gt? :)

I'd sugest lookinh at benchmarks, no its not better, its just a cut down 8800GT, it's close to the GT when a game is not shader intensive I think.

You see, I never understand why they bring a new series out which makes it sound like it's going to be a better card, when it's actually not? :S

Its a good card, its a replacement for the 8600GT or GTS and its a lot faster than those 2 cards, but at the moment the price is too high tbh..
 
Some benchies show it better than the 256MB 8800GT :confused:

But 9000-series, mid-range is looking very good compared to 8000-series :)

256mb is a limiting factor. Its also 50mhz faster core than the 8800GT so it will could pull slightly ahead in games that are not as much shader intensive.

Smaller BUS less SP. Just look at the specs!:eek:

Its got a 256bit bus.

well if people who name the cards were logical, it would mean that the 9600 should be faster than the 8800 ULTRA, also, the slowest cards in the 8 range, should be faster then 7 etc...

but they dont name things properly

No they shouldn't.

They are split into 3 categories, the 200/300/400's are always low end parts, so a new generation of a low end part WILL NOT compete a last generation high end part because, well, its just not meant to.
The 500/600 series are always mid range, and again are not made to compete with high end parts, just offer great performance for your money and to be better than the last generation mid range.
The 800/900 Series are the high end parts and the new generation ones will be better than any previous card out.

So basically a 9600GT is designed to better the mid range sector and has nothing to do with the high end at all.

They do name them sensibly. First number = range, last 3 numbers = model, extra letters = variant or 'swing tag' (although they do cheat slightly, sometimes, but not too much).

The lowest spec of a new card will never be faster than the top range old style. Would you expect the bottom model of a new car range to be faster then the previous model's GTi?
 
The 7600 GT genuinely was faster than the 6800 cards, though. The 9600 GT is just what the 8600 GT should have been tbh. The mainstream is a generation behind, the 8600 GT was only very slightly faster than the 7600 GT...

here is a simple version of what i was saying
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 .. Nvidia make 10 cards in order and number them, why is card 8 better then 9?

not that im confused by the situation, but if you ask people in PC world who want to buy they have no idea, and they would 100% think 9600 is better then 8800 by around 800 points!!!

Hey PC World need to sell all those 8400GS's to somebody :p;).
 
it's slightly slower than the 8800GT unfiltered, but impressive on filtered images with AA, AF enabled etc.

interesting card tbh.
