So I have been running on a GeForce GTX 580 now for sometime and was waiting for the 980 to arrive before I upgraded. I'm running dual screens at 1080 and haven't invested any time looking at upgrading to 4K yet.

Looking at the price difference between the 970 and the 980, is the 33% difference in price worth the performance boost between the two?

What you been doing the 980 has been out for over a year ! :)

Seriously same as said 980 needs a price drop 580 > 970 is a nice boost, less power and quieter/cooler.

New the 970 is the best buy, but second hand the 980s become a lot more appealing at around £280 for a boxed one.

Depends. If you can pick a 980 up for new 970 money then your invested money is safer as the 980 will always sell for more than a 970 but if you want a new card then agreed 970. When i went from 970 to 980 it was noticable. What i did notice the most was the peak fps was not amazingly higher 15% ish but the lowest fps and average was a fair bit higher. However pound per fps the 980 is expensive compared to the 970.

I just sold my 980 for 285 posted so if you can grab one at that price i would argue your better off in the long run than a new 970 for sure. But you could then mix in 970's going 2nd hand for £200. Tough call i always run the theory of spend the most i comfortable with but in this case it really is tough the 970 is miles better "value"

If you ever plan on going sli in the future then definitely the 980.

At strictly 1 monitor 1080p, get a 970.

However if you consider a 980, it's price "as new" ain't worth, because at same price there is the R9 Nano new, or used Fury X, which are more powerful.

Try used one. However don't spend more than £300 for a GTX980

R9 390 is good for the price but would require more power than a 970. It's good at 1440p
