970 SLI Build Help

Speaking on another forum at moment and getting sent messages that I should get a 1080p g sync monitor surely 2x970 would smash 1080p even on absolute max settings. I honestly would be surprised if it struggled on 1440P.

Get 1440p, no point at ALL in getting 1080p with 970 SLI

or some other options

Thanks I thought the same about 1080p being worthless wish I could afford that Swift monitor but this build alone is going skint me and will likely get enough grief without spending another £500 think I will pick up this Monitor when it comes out 1440p and I find 24 inch is a good size for me.

Though the Samsung Monitor you linked looks good as well will get these parts after Christmas now early January assemble it and then wait for next pay check and get a solid monitor.

Looks okay, though it is IPS so not the best for gaming, though still seems decent enough

I have a 1440p 27" and find it's a perfect size for 1440p, 24" miiight be a bit too small?

Hmm that is a good point haven't used a 27 in a while and never used a 27 1440p. 1080p 27 used to look a lot worse than 1080p 24 to me. Isn't PLS just Samsung's name for IPS panels anyway?

Not going get parts till early Jan now so will wait till then and see if anyone has reviewed the ASUS.

Actually yeah good point, PLS is albeit slightly worse than IPS but still good

I'd seriously consider getting 27" for 1440p, yes it's a bit too big for 1080p but for 1440p it's the sweet spot

For SLI in a small case get blower coolers ideally

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-205-OK

They have blower coolers which essentially blow the air out of the back instead of "dumping" air into the case like most other coolers
The OcUK one's do carry a premium, but are well worth it. However, some cheaper, lower quality but still blower-style coolers

A single 980 might also be a good idea... less heat etc dumped into the case

Bought a 980 recently for 1440p/4k but now I am wondering whether I should have been better off with 970 SLI.

Just wondering about 2 x Galax Reference as per above. Case is big enough though its a Fractal R4. Reference or custom cooling. Hmmm not sure yet.

I'd go custom for that, big enough case
Tbh 980 isn't a great VALUE buy, the 970 is very nearly as fast (about 10% iirc) and is about 60% of the price, so is a great deal. However for the e-peen (I've got a 980) then there's only one option :D

Or a 295x2? They are going for £500 on the OC site right now!!

Honestly reason I'm going 970 SLI is because I think even though it is going cost me around £350 more because of my major screw up in picking PSU and Motherboards. Is that I know I'm going to have a solid gaming experience where as a 980 can't give that on its own. This way also system is likely to last a bit longer and having a larger PSU never hurts matters.

Dont think my PSU could cope its only 750W plus my monitor is gsync.
Think I might go for two GALAX GeForce GTX 970 EX OC. Got a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 7 so should be enough space.

I considered a R295x2 but didn't think it would fit in the case but would have likely given better performance than the 970 SLI setup I'm going to build though I would have only had to get a bigger PSU for that don't think motherboard would have needed be changed.

Shivy you know if a R9 295x2 would fit in my case? I know we been discussing 970 SLI but didn't realise how cheap those cards had got and gives comparable gaming experience plus you get an extra 4GB VRAM.

hm, I doubt it would fit, it has a radiator along with it, tubes and the card itself is a beast in length

I think it only has 4GB RAM too, 4 per core but don't quote me on that one

Figured as much but I've just checked measurements it would fit in length as it says it's 307mm in length and my case takes up to 320mm in length and max cooler height is 160mm and the R9 295x2 is 153mm.

Cooler height refers to CPU cooler not GPU cooler so that's irrelevant :)

Well it *should* fit but given the choice I'd take 970 SLI - newer tech, supports G-sync (AMD freesync will be out pretty soon)

Your choice though :)

Yeah I was talking about CPU Cooler "Those who prefer air cooling will be pleased to see that tall CPU coolers up to 160mm can be mounted with no fuss. "

I think 970 SLI is perhaps better but it's going to be hundreds more £500 for a R9 295x2 say another £100-150 for a PSU to power it.

You forgot motherboard I would need for 970 SLI wouldn't need replace that for a R9 295x2. So that's another 100 pounds.

Ah yep, £200 then

I don't know then, this decision is probably up to you

I'm sure you could recoup about £45-60 selling your motherboard on so it'd be about an extra £150?
