I'm thinking of getting the 290x lightning and sending the 970 back. I'm on a 1080p TV .

Just wondering if anyone has done this and what are your thoughts?

Pre thread hysteria along the lines of '970's faster' and 'Lightnings faster', they are much of a muchness minus vendor gubbins-well, apart from the 290X specs are what they have always been.

They have the performance, the 290X lightning is built with one of the best coolers, so it tops around 75C.
If you change it, you will have the same performance. I don't know what 970 you have, maybe the lightning will be more hearable, but its far from noisy. So its up to you.

The 970 is fine for 1080p...it just depends if your happy having the mick taken out of you by a multi billion dollar corporation :(

Out of principle and resale value I'd ditch the 970 while you can IMO....

resale value will still keep. forget hysteria.

the lightnings power use alone would put me off that 750w psu :D

also its exactly same performance for older tech.

at 1080 a 970 is faster than any 290.

with better drivers that will increase even more.

I hate AMD after using a 280X and both companies have screwed the customer at some point in their life time. So I'd stick with the 970x, if the vram is such an issue, turn down the levels of AA :p

Not much point really, you won't be able to tell the difference between the two cards.
I've had both and the 290x is faster, but only when you push a lot of volts through it.

that lightening 290x is brilliant, I can max out dying light on my 1440p monitor and play it without getting any lag, and its the best looking cooler out there

why do you think no one buys em !!! great made cards power usage just lol.

I've got the G1. Thing is everyone just thinks the 970 only has the vram issue but way before that reared up I was complaining about low usage/fps.

The geforce driver forum was awash with the low usage/fps problems. I've been hoping a new driver would sort this out but I've been waiting for months.

Saying that, lately I've been playing arkham asylum and TR which both have played well. Although TR felt like it had very tiny micro stutter at times like it was starting to go slow motion with fps between 45/60

That doesn't really mean much. My PC draws less than 500W with it.

I think they go overboard on the PSU requirement as you can plug the other 6pin in as well as the 2 8pin if you wish to go crazy on the OC. It runs fine on the 2 8pin.

290x takes around 90WATTS more than a 970. Nothing to worry about really.

Seriously OP, stick with what you have. If it has been trouble, of course send it back but if it has been a nuisance free, stay.

Most of the 970 vitriol is by AMD users.

My advice is this.

Send the 970 back and then buy the cheapest bloody R290 you can get your hands on.

That way you dodge the expensive Nvidia launch price bullet and can save up for the next gen cards which will be here pretty soon.

Once they launch? your 970 will be worth half of what it's worth now.

If AMD come in at an aggressive price point on the 390x that will in turn give Nvidia a reality slap (let's say £450) and the prices of their over priced mid range cards will drop like a lead balloon.

Are you even reading the same forum as us? Cause I recall the number of actual 970 users reporting and describing their issues vastly outnumber the numbers of "AMD users" you claim to be having a go and taking the situation for a joy ride.

I completely agree that AMD users cannot give reliable informed opinions toward the reality of the actual performance or issues because they can only pass on what they read; however the same can be said about any Nvidia users who doesn't own the 970 specifically claiming the 970's issue is blown out of proportion has no basis neither.

do what YOU want to do OP. If the 970 is performing great for you stick with it, if you don't like it change it.

The only one who can make that choice is you, most people here are biased and that's to be expected. So you can only make the choice based on your own experience.
