Simple question: Do you think that the 7970 will be as great as the 9700pro, and if not why does it cost more in real terms?

The 9700pro was launched at $399 during October 2002
The 7970 was launched at $549 in December 2011.

The cost for the 9700pro in today's money would be $496 according to historical US inflation rates for the period.
 
You've not factored in inflation i.e. your probably earning more now than in 2002!

A great or landmark card like the 9700pro can only be gauged after it's been out for a while and stood the test of time, personally I feel the GTX 580 is the latest card heading for greatness :)
 
9700pro walked all over anything else in games using the latest version of DX at the time, 7970 is fast but it doesn't walk all over previous generation cards anything like as convincingly - until you slap 3 of them in tri-fire.

Theres not been a card since the 9700pro thats come anywhere near the kind of performance jump that the 9700pro brought. I looked at an old review and the 9700pro walked all over the ti4600 with sometimes 500% lead. I dont think we will ever see this again. I think the 7970 will be a good seller for amd if the price comes down a bit because theres not any competiton. The 5870 was the same and gave nvidia a good kick in the butt.

The only card that I can think of which comes close would be the 8800GTX. Overall the 9700pro was better because it not only offered monsterous performance, it provided great new and usable features. It put ATI in the game and halted NVidia's dominance. It spanked NVidia's 4x00 & 5x00 cards, and even put up a fight against their 6x00 range. The 7970 offers decent performance but IMO nothing groundbreaking. It will be interesting to see how Kepler compares to the 8800GTX.

I remember going from a G-Force 5200 to a 9800 pro, massive upgrade that saw me through HL2 and the early days of WoW.

Had to get another one as the first one got fried, but what a great card and still have it in a drawer somewhere.

Perhaps the 7970 will be remembered in the same way as the 5800 cards. Both had stunning launch prices:).

TBH,the HD5850 1GB and HD5870 1GB were unrivalled at the time they were launched. The HD5870 1GB had similar performance to an HD4870X2 and nearly half the peak power consumption. Even now they are decent cards and their RRP at launch was relatively low too. Before that the 8800GTX had a similar effect at the time,probably closer to the 9700 Pro though than the HD5870 1GB.
