Behind you... Naked!
Ok, I was going to explain the why and the what nots about this, but instead, lets just get to basics...

Windows 98SE to Windows ME

I no longer have the ME Upgrade Disk or any licences.

I do however have a pile of ME licences for the full RETAIL edition of ME

However, when I try to upgrade 98SE to ME, the SERIAL numbers are all NOT allowed when upgrading... They will of course be just fine for a fresh install, but thats NOT an option at this time.

There is a way that you can setup a few thigns that will let me upgrade 98 to ME, but Im shafted if I can remember???

Can anyone else remember that far back?

I have knocked up a VM just to experiment and I am stuffed as to what I needed to do, and a scout on Google showed me nada!

HELP!

I'n struggling to think why anyone would want to go from Win98SE to WinME ... the former being so much more stable than that latter (which was infamous for it's quality)

Why can't you fresh install? Files are easily backed up, and legacy software might get broken in the process of the upgrade anyway.

Jesus

Just had to check this , thought my eyes playing tricks on me

I would rather shave my penis off with a cheese grater then go to ME

To call it a down grade would be understatement of the year

Sorry guys, as I said, I could go into the whys and the wot-nots but I didnt want to, but I will give oyu the basics.

Firstly Im in total agreement with you. 98SE over ME anyday.

However...

I setup a Laptop some 8 or 9 years ago for the wifes mum, and this laptop has been absolutely flawless and still is, and she uses it every day to check her Emails ( 8 years on ME without a hitch not impossible then I see )

Now, what has happned, is that the wifes dad ( No, they dont live together anymore ) has seen Windows Me and he now wants it on his PC.

This is where it gets bloody annoying, but even though his PC is a P2/400 with Windows 98SE and he is on Dialup, about 2 years ago, I gave him an XP2400 based PC with 512MB and a 40GBHD with Win2000 on!!!

Where is that?

Its next to his P2/400 doing nothing.

Now, he has said that he wants me to get 98 up to ME

He is very old school and wont go to 2000, does not want XP because its so unreliable ( Yeah, I know ) and thinks Vista is a kind of fizzy drink.

Its worse but thats the basics... I have no real choice but to give it a shot.

Why not a fresh install?
This is what I said, but he has his PC setup this way and its been this way since he got it.

I have also said that an upgrade might mess things up and that backing up and a fresh install would really be the best option, but no.

So, I really do need to know what to do to get ME onto 98

I have now got it to give a go but now my Serials are not playing.

The semi-cure was to delete WIN.COM

So, I can only think now that I should try some hookie serials, but I have loads that are legal so its not much to ask is it?

I might just see if anyone will swap a full retail for an upgrade?

Oh, I have just been reminded by the wife, that he is running software that only works in 9x anyway and does not work in 2000/XP and thats why he is not using my PC I gave him...

Ok, fair enough there then.

I know this isn't really helping your problem, but doing an upgrade install of ME over an already old installation of Windows 98 is only going to cause problems. I just honestly can't see it working reliably. Upgrade installs have only become somewhat feasible since XP, before that they were atrociously messy.

That said, I imagine you've probably already tried to explain that to him!

To be honest, it'd probably be easier to just change the Windows 98 boot screen to the Windows Me one and leave it at that.

Don't use Me in the first place, I used it when it first came out it was on my PC for a hour and then I upgraded to 2KP instead. Hated the OS and still do.

Sorry

A Million times ... And some!

To be honest, it'd probably be easier to just change the Windows 98 boot screen to the Windows Me one and leave it at that.

LOL, And why not?

The DeFrag from ME is much better than 98 and the Hardware recognition - especially USB Flash Drives etc are also better supported in ME, but apart from that???

Ah, disable the DOS Prompt too

I might pull it off?

I would tell him that it is not possible without breaking his software he uses.

He already knows his software will be fine.

Sometimes the only solution is to do it no matter what... In this case, every time I see him, its the same old story... When are you coming over, shall I bring the PC round, do this do that do the other blah blah.

So, I want to do it... He is a nci eguy even if I am making him out to be a douche, he is a nice guy who really wants me to up him to ME and I kind of feel a jerk in not doing it, so I do want to.

Kind of.

I can't actually believe what I'm hearing lol, someone who wants to upgrade to a 10yr old operating system. He is totally using you, charge him if he wants pointless computer work doing. And where on earth did he see ME anyway considering no one uses the pos?

Just delay him till he forgets about it. If he harps on about it, mistakenly install 2k then become very busy.
Or play up the huge security risks in systems not using the NT kernel.

Me is probably the worst OS MS have produced. Even worse than Vista.
2k on the other hand was brilliant in its day and is still pretty nifty.

*Checks date*

Yep, 2009. Not crazy.

Introduce him to Linux. :p

EDIT : Isn't there a way to doctor the splash screen to look like ME?

He is a Radio ham. He uses a program that only works on 98/Me and so thats why he cannot use 2K

Obviously he cannot use 2K either.

As for doctoring the boot screen, this can be done with LOGO.SYS or whatever?

Cant remember right now, but its simple to do...

I still have my 2K licenses.

Nothing wrong with using 2K even today it holds its own very well against XP and out of my own software, it runs more suff than Vista64 does, so...
