980 pricing?

Since when has it cost £500 for a 980! I get that team green has a lot going for it, but surely you would have to take leave of your sanity to spend 60% more (£200!) for an extra 10-15fps in the best case, sometimes equal performance in the worst?

Is AMD's rep really that bad these days? You could have 290X crossfire (Asus DCII) for less than one 980, and people are still buying them? Madness!
 
not madness with the experiences i had with the 290x range, more problems and down time than anything.

Switched to 780ti and then two 980s and dont regret it one bit.

Titan z? Back in the day amd cpu's were faster and cheaper than the intel counterparts, apparently we all should have been buying intel because they cost more..

Cheaper and faster maybe , but there is other things to take in like driver support, how long it will last, cooling, power consumption etc..

All depends what you want I suppose ! I've just always found that the more I've paid for something the better it is , generally speaking :D
I'm more interested in power and performance but everyone is different and prefer different things :)
 
They were better by every metric :p not saying that is true of 290s now, but still.

There will always be people who'll pay more for things to the extent that others will think it's over the odds, often justifying it with 'costing more must mean it is better' and for some this is true, as their enjoyment of it reflects their perceived value.

The 980 is a rubbish value proposition given it's performance relative to the 970, so even nVidia fans shouldn't be buying it based on value, but as with most hobbies it's about if you enjoy it really - all of these cards are well into the territory where people may be enjoying them for the card itself more than for the gaming impact, which makes price to performance ratios less relevant.
 
That's what I'm trying to get my head around. I'm not knocking nvidia here. If they can sell them at that price then I can't blame them. I'm just surprised that people think "yes, I will pay £200 more for this card because it is not AMD".

My 290s never breach 80c or 45% fans in xfire, yet they are branded "crazy hot" by detractors. Certainly AMD had that god-awful 4 month gap between drivers which was frankly inexcusable, but a month later they have released a cracking profile for gta v and seem to be back to normal service.

I'll go wherever the best performance per £ is, and it's good for everyone if AMD stay competitive. So why have AMD gpu's become the AMD cpu's of the graphics world when they are actually really good value? I can only assume their marketing team have just phoned it in because they need to sort their image out desperately. If you can't sell a 295x2 at the same price as a 980 something is wrong (or the other way around even).

I'd be interested to hear from 980 owners as to why they decided to go that route, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if none of them said "because it offered good value for money" and instead said "because I didn't want a hot card and bad drivers" or something like that. Well £200 seems a lot to spend too keep your case temps down
 
Usually it comes down to "drivers", seemingly we're still stuck in the early 2000's where that line of complaint had some validity.
 
Been keeping an eye in GTX980 prices and looks like they're headed in the wrong direction. Reference cards in particular have shot up in price on OcUK.

Could say it is simply down to supply and demand - often none in stock or stock below 5 units - then prices higher thanks to stronger dollar. I'd say its best to buy at launch unless you wanted non-reference cards.

I often come across complaints on other tech sites and they are loud and clear from around the world at the silly cost in some regions, Australia came high at 3x the cost of the 980 in US. Whatever red tape is causing that has been ongoing for as long as I can remember.

Europe never seem to get enough supply from Nvidia and backlog of Titan X highlights this, add on that Nvidia charges what can (don't mistake this for bashing because even Huang talked of this), and those stores that do finally get stock bump up prices as some silly exclusive at being able to get them lol. Keep your options open and don't easily dismiss AMD, full of surprises that I'm keeping a watch for my next upgrade from 780Ti.
 
The thing is, I'm not dismissing AMD. I think their products are very good value. I'm just surprised that we as consumers let Nvidia get away with the price gouging. If they didn't sell at that price they would be cheaper, but we buy them anyway.

I think it's more of a cultural thing than nvidia cards actually being worth 60% more than their AMD counterpart.

The 980 is way way overpriced. I bought this:

Overclocked it a bit and got basically the same performance.
