Just installed a 980 Pro M.2 nVME drive after using an 850 EVO as my main boot drive for years. Honestly not seeing any difference whatsoever in Windows boot times or how fast games load.

Did a fresh Windows install. Have M.2 support enabled in bios.

Crystal disk benches it at 3000 odd MB/s, which appears to be half of what the reviewers got when they tested it.

Am I doing something wrong? If not what's the point of it ?

If it's the system in your signature it doesn't support PCI-E 4 so 3000MB/s is about right.

You won't see any major difference in load or boot times. There really isn't a major improvement in either with an NVME drive.

If you move large amounts of data around regularly then NVME has a use case but for most users there's little difference between a SATA 3 SSD and even a top end NVME drive.

It seems like games need to be designed with nvme in mind to show big improvements in load times, most are not going to be noticeable.

When the console ports come over and DirectStorage is used more widely, you might see it matter more.

The bottleneck currently is the software. It's just not designed around high speed storage.

Direct storage and other technologies are aimed to change that.

But even with loading you hit a performance ceiling pretty quickly and faster drives don't necessarily offer tangible benefits.

I remember expecting to be blown away when moving from my SATA SSD to M.2. The truth is, I was quite underwhelmed. You will see the biggest performance boost when copying large files, as I did when copying ISO images.
