980 TI SLI now or wait for Pascal?

I've just moved from 780sli to 1 980ti for the moment after going to a ROG Swift, fps wise on TW3 it hasn't improved much but it's a lot smoother and I'm no longer getting the same issues I had whilst running the 780s.

The 780sli ran any other game I played fine with gsync on, if your happy with your current setup and haven't got the upgrade itch then wait :)

Wait and see what your performance is like in a directx12 game. Considering how nvidia like to gimp their older lines in drivers.

Are there any sensible projections on just how potent Pascal is going to be? If the reduction to 16nm along with all the other stuff really is a game-changer then I think I might be better off waiting. Hmmmm, choices choices...

First Pascal is likely to be Little Pascal like the GTX 980 is Little Maxwell so don't expect big gains over GM200 cards until Big Pascal turns up.

Physicsman, I am in the same boat. Love the idea of Fury/980Ti performance, but cannot justify the cost at the moment. I find that my 780's cope in the main in the games I play. I guess only you can make the decision to jump.

Lots of talk about stutter on SLI. Kaap, you seem like someone that would know. Is SLI stutter a noticeable problem relative to XDMA crossfire setups?

I'm being forced to discard a 295x-2 and 290 for something green, and a single 980ti benches quite a bit lower. 2 would put in in the same ballpark, but talk of SLI stutter is... Off-putting?

I currently run 2x780tis and i have never noticed any kind of stutter. I have recently upgraded to a philips 60hz 4k monitor, i was considering going to a single 980ti but what with this deal on the zotacs going for a pair of 980tis instead of a single one.

I dont suffer from any stutter either. If it is there, I certainly dont notice. Perhaps others are more susceptible to it.

Used to have a ATI 4870x2 card, after stutter on that I've been put off SLI or XFire. It used to detract from my gaming experience greatly.

I'm having to RMA a 780 Inno overclocked card shortly, I have been looking at the other cards around atm and finding it tempting yet Win 10, DX 12, Fury X being around the corner its leaving me unsure what to do.

Can say I'm looking forward to going without a card for the weeks its going to take to process my RMA :(

Little pascal probably won't be worth it. If you believe your cards aren't good enough then upgrade but I'd wait a few days to see if the furyx brings the prices down. I couldn't care less about the furyx due to amd's terrible crossfire drivers and the 4gb vram on the furyx but competition is always good for consumers.

Stutter is something that everyone seems to see differently.

Me I don't really see much of it and there is very little difference between SLI and crossfire they both seem to work well most of the time.

I think there is a lot more to the subject than which brand of card you use though like what are you using in the rest of the PC. I use X79 and X99 which both have lots of PCI-E lanes and bandwidth available so maybe that is one reason I don't see micro stutter.

What I don't like using is single cards on some things as there is a lot of screen tearing, I know I could fix this with either a G-Sync or A-Sync monitor though.

Another reason I may not be getting stutter is I use max settings @2160p which tends to keep the fps at reasonable levels with the minimums and maximums close to the average. I also don't have to run my CPUs that fast and normally keep them @4.0ghz.

I think a good idea is too wait for Win 10 and DX12 as this could be the way forward with future games and stutter.

I think stutter is psychological. Knowing there are two cards in the system, have read about it stutter, so are more sensitive to differences in the imagery.
Bit like placebo;s.
I tried Sli back in 2006 and dont't recall anything back then. Surely it's sorted by now? :).

I can watch a movie and focus on enjoying the movie where as my bother hears noises outside, notices imperfections in the image, things need to be perfect for him to enjoy the movie - I just enjoy it.
Ever had your attention brought to something that is annoying and then find yourself tuned into it but hadn't noticed it before?

"Awesome, I have bought two cards for Sli. Oh, I have read about microstutter, I wonder if I'll see it."
"Oh no, I have microstutter"

No idea really but think psychology has a part a play in this.

Also in the same boat. I have a single 780ti on a rog swift and although games are very playable at high settings I'm Not getting the most out of my monitor (40-60fps Witcher 3, 50-70 gta v). Thinking should I flog the 780ti and get a 980ti or just wait a year for pascal....

Thanks mate, that's pretty much what I was hoping to hear. I don't think I am particularly sensitive to stutter, and I am sure I have been happy with the performance of trifire on the 290 series. I was a bit concerned because SLI still goes over a bridge and I'd heard the frame times and pacing suffer for it, but if someone with such a genuinely neutral perspective as yourself says it's a non-issue then that's good enough for me.

Fury X isn't Crossfire and 4GB HBM is NOT 4GB DDR5... not sure why this is so hard for people to grasp. The reviews next week will reveal all, but you are simply dismissing a card based on your lack of understanding of the technology. Pascal is set to further improve upon the Fury X with HBM2, so you saying it "probably won't be worth it" makes no sense. Seems you just hate AMD and no matter what they do you'll find fault. Never understood this attitude, but I've been seeing it a lot since Fiji was announced.
