9800 series

Looks like OcUK will have Gainward cards on launch and looks like they already have them. ;)

Ive never really understood the diference between brands like BFG/Gainward. Apart from diferent cooling methods and casings, its the same hardware right? If your going to overclock its pretty much the same right,. i mean, unless one has massively better cooling than the rest.

Can someone fill me in on this? Ive always gone for BFG because its the first card i got and i just stuck with it.

well the standard cards are pretty much the same between companys
but when theyve got these 'overclocked' editions they tend to use better cores so they can guarantee that the card will be stable at their pre-set overclocked speeds

they tend to use better cores

So are you saying they pre-test the gpu's and then use the ones that OC the best in their OC editions?

Thats very interesting. I always assumed they were exactly the same apart from a slight overclock done in the factory. From what your saying its worth buying an OC edition over a standard one because it might OC further.

Its not always true, every OC card I have owned did around the same clock as the standard card.

There were a lot of 8800GT OC cards artifacting and having to be run under the speeds they should have so they definatly didnt have better cores. There were many threads on here about that.

tbh if the GTX is around £250, and is better than the 8800GTX people like me(with a 7600GS) and other7/6/x100/x1000 series would have a pleasure in upgrading

Yeah, I'm on an X1600XT here, and ordering parts soon... Watching with interest. What's the general consensus regarding pricing on the 8800 series cards? That is, will the release of the 9800s have any bearing whatsoever on 8800 prices?
