I upgraded from this trash:
gecubex1300frontcustomfi0.jpg

to an evga 9800GTX+ 1gb

It finally arrived yesterday, after a trip to the post office - with a few bits missing, as usual with me  I had to run to the Stratford computer fair to buy a DVI cable because it wasn't in the box, also there is only one 6PIN power cable - on the box it said there should be two (I was confused with this because the card only has one PCI-E Power slot anyhow). OC nevertheless sent me a DVI adapter which will arrive on Monday for free :)

Box recommends a 500W PSU and I'm 75W short of that. I thought if I disconnect a CD drive and one HDD it will be ok.

the GTX+ has only one 6 pin PCI power slot so plugging in the PCI-E power cable from my cheap PSU was not enough, I had to use two different cables and plug 'em into the converter thing and then into the card.

It managed to start after some persuasion and a clean format (frikking hard upgrading from ATI to NVIDIA) I had the opportunity to test it briefly in some games. Remember that I usually play below 1k resolutions with graphics on low  I was gobsmacked when Quake Wars and COD4 put all settings onto max automatically and I was getting a consistent frame rate of 30 in QW (its locked to 30) and 80+-10 in COD. Wow.

Then it shut my pc down and refused to start again.

So Ive ordered a new PSU hoping that it will solve my problems.

I'm posting using my old ATI x1300
Now a few questions. When booting, the fan revs up and down. is this normal? Also, when the windows xp loading screen comes up, the fan revs and my system reboots.

I tried all sorts of reconnections to try and give it enough juice (im assuming its what it needs) to no avail.

Hopefully, once my 650W corsair arrives I will be a happy shopper.

Whe it comes to graphics cards it's all about amps on the 12v rail, how many does your current psu have?

I bet 90+% of the cheapo psu's don't supply there stated voltage/amps.

Your old psu might have not been upto the job, you could have got the 450w model and it would have been enough.

I would rather have a 400W decent psu than a 750W non branded piece of crap of flea bay.

It's all about quality not quantity ;)

I have a Hiper (hiss boo) I read about all the blow out problems. Like I said above, I've bought a 650W Corsair as a replacement :D

Was just watching some youtube videos and all the 9800 I see have two 6pin power slots. Mine only has one.

Does that mean I have to take two separate wires from my PSU and connect both to the adapter as in my first post and then into the single slot in my card?

Hiper's aren't always failures, I think reading these forums gives you a very polarised view of things.

My Hiper 580w has been running an X1900XT 512mb for over two years now and for a few months it ran a HD4870 with 4 hard drives and lots more. Since I've built a new pc, it's gone back to running an X1900XT but it's still working perfectly fine. I've had any power related issues and certainly have not experienced any random reboots.

Just my 2 cents. :D

BTW, I also currently have the Corsair 650w PSU and it is indeed brilliant. Just make sure your case has some space to tuck away all those cables, otherwise you'll quickly have case airflow problems.

The Corsair 650w has two 6+2 pin PCI-E power cables, so all you do is just connect these two 6 pin cables to it, but leave the extra 2 pin bits out.

If you're talking about your old PSU (which I assume does not have PCI-E power cables) then you'll need two of those adaptors (shown on your first post) and a total of 4 molex power connectors.

Thats the problem, the card only has one 6pin slot. NOT two like in the video above

Hmm.. That 9800GTX+ is a whopping £172 on OcUK. Why didn't you just spend a little extra a grab a 4870 or GTX260?

That little extra is quite a lot.

That little extra is quite a lot.

When they perform about 20-50% faster in modern titles, for an extra £10-30 you would have had a much better card.

The 9800GTX+ is not a bad card, but no way worth £170. The 4850 is faster in a lot of cases and costs £130.

Just connect one of the connectors from the PSU. I suspect the 9800GTX+ doesn't really need two. I picked up an MSI version for £128 (now £131) and it's been absolutely solid at Folding for the last few months.

Ive never heard of the 9800 GTX/+ having only one 6x Pin Power connector, as when they renamed them from the 8800 GTS 512mb, they also stuck them on a longer PCB and added the extra power connector, as well as another SLi connector so you could do Tri SLi with them.

Check it out.

You can see two sli connections and only one power connector. Also that extension was the only one it the box.

The box was missing the DVI adapter and one PCIE power cable. Although I did get an s-video extension and another adapter for other video in stuff like cameras and junk.

Weird that, i suppose as long as it is a 9800 GTX+ then theres nothing to worry about.

They may have done real early ones with only 1x power connector. :)

unless it's a newer design that's more energy efficient. other that that i agree with LoadsaMoney by saying that 9800GTX+'s have 2 connections as their power hungary cards

I think imma call the OC technicians to ask about it tomorrow.

[Edit]
Just found it on another site and pics show its exactly the same as mine. Only one 6pin slot. I think it draws more power from the mobo. That or from the rail.
Edit2
"I just looked on EVGA and the 9800gtx requires two 6 pin connectors while every version of the 9800gtx+ only needed 1."

I have the Gigabyte version with the zalman fan and my card only has one six pin slot and it has been working flawlessly for about a month now. My Psu is a Tagan 480W, over 3yrs old and I have no problems.:D

Good to hear. My PSU is only 425W :( Card sort of reboots my PC from time to time so I put it back in the box and am waiting for my PSU to arrive. I managed to play some games and wow, Im impressed. But what do you expect when you go from an x1300 to this?

Thats right loadsa I'm well chuffed with mine, that zalman fan means 35c idle and only 45c gaming on Fallout3, also the Gigabyte is quite a bit shorter than most of the other models.:D
Only downside is the 2 pin fan connection means the fan spins 100% though its not too noisy but I'm working on a way to slow it down a bit.
