9800GX2 price and final specs announced

And an sli mobo I presume!?

Makunouchi's got it spot on I reckon. Nvidia are all too aware that they're chipset isn't the best or most popular with enthusiasts and see this leaves a gap in their gpu line up.

Sorry for a OT question: Can you do crossfire (3870X2) on a sli (680i) mobo?

Im gonna snap up another 8800gtx as the price is bound to drop a little with the release of the gx2, im sure 8800gtx sli will be faster anyhow.:)

So far 2 ppl said yes I can run crossfire and 1 said no :( I think I should wait until someone else tries to crossfire it on a sli mobo before getting another one (sorry for the OT posts)

I dont understand why people are using the arguement of "its just 2 GTS's stuck together" as a negative against the GX2. You are aware that most people have mobo's with a single graphics card slot? And that most people don't want the hassle or the cost of buying and installing a new SLI mobo and the effort of getting two cards running in SLI?

People want a single card solution for graphics, so if the GX2 is actually 2 GTS's stuck together they are giving people exactly what they want, sounds sensible to me.

If i remember, the 7950GX2 only worked on SLi boards when it came out, now if this is the same (which they say it is), then they are going to have to buy SLi boards as well to go with them, if they ain't got em already.

I'm pretty sure you won't need an SLI board for the GX2, otherwise there truely would be no point. Also theres been no indication that thats the case so far, and im pretty sure there would have been mass coverage if that was the case. And didnt someone post a link to the GX2 manual on these forums? I don't think there was any mention of that in there...

I think what most people mean when they say it's just 2 GTS's stuck together is that it should really be two brand new tech 9 series cards stuck together rather than two old tech 8 series cards. That's the way I see it any way. :)

Yep spot on. Im just annoyed because they are using old tech and calling it something it isn't. Poor marketing really, that will probably turn out to be good marketing because there will be loads of chumps who will buy it.

Yep, its just a con but if for some miraculous reason the new 9800gtx is miles ahead of the curent one then i will buy it. If its like 10% faster they can bugger off. For me personally i'd only buy it for 30%+ increase in performance.

Rant

It has to be jugde on it's dx10 performance so a 30% increase in speed will be no use to man nor beast, for me to upgrade to a gx2 it needs to able run dx10 @ 1920x1200 on v high with 35fps min to justify the price(if £300+) it is after all the ultra high end card that we've been waiting two years for is it to much to ask that it performs as such, but we all know thats unlikly to be the case using two g92 core's plus much cheaper cards have dx9 cracked at this res so why spend the extra.
I feel that a 8800 based gx2 is nine months over due and set to fail, if it cant fill the gap in the very top end of the market or it's to expensive then its just pointless, and it could well be the case that the only people this card will appeal to is those who have a three or so year old card and spend big every few years, the ill informed brain washed idiot or obsessive benchmarkers.

I plan to wait and see, if it's expensive regurgated more of the same rubish then im keeping my money in my pocket if it'll do the biz then ill buy one simple

End Rant

The only reason this is getting everyone's backs up, as far as i can see, is that NV have called the it the 9 series. I would put money on the fact that if they'd called it the 8900 series there wouldn't be half as many complaints. Come on guys, its just a name, thats all it is!

I agree that we would all like to see new tech, but apart from Crysis there's not a lot of games that need new, faster cards at the moment to make them look good or run a decent frame rates. An since we have no official benchmarks from anywhere for this card lets just wait and see, NV may even surprise us, you never know!!
