Pairing these together, I've tried to do research on it all and it looks like all I'm missing out on is PCIE 5.0 but after asking chat gpt a few questions, we're no where near using all of PCIE 4 and a youtube video showed about 5 fps difference between pcie3 and pcie4 with some of the 1% lows higher.

The asrock live mixer seems to have good VRM which I think is whats needed for the 9800x3d, I've currently got a budget PSU (cit fx pro 800w) which I've had running fine for ages but I'll be upgrading that to a 1000w corsair.

I'm not looking to do any extreme overclocking and it'll be mostly used for gaming and the odd bit of video editing.

Thoughts?

I guess I'm more wondering if I'm not making a mistake getting a b650, the price is good enough.

I'd be playing at 1440, I play everything really from new releases but the staple game is Escape From Tarkov. The 3070 I have is really struggling with the 8gb of ram and I think really has from game to game, Stalker 2 has just been another in the line causing issues

I saw someone say "If you dont know why you need an x870 you probably dont need one" and that kinda stuck with me, so "depending on what you're getting the livemixer for" is the same to me, I have no idea! lol I just want it to be suitable for the 9800x3d and play games on it without feeling like I'm leaving much on the table - it seems to have a good review on the VRMs which would make it suitable for the cpu, its around 150 and anything with similar VRMs is 200+ but also comes with a few extra bells and whistles like PCIE 5.0 and USB 4 which I've no real need for and again, from what I've looked online people seem to suggest by the time you'll NEED pcie5 you'll probably need a new setup anyway.

That's a good point on the PSU, I have the Corsair RM1000e (2023) in my basket but I keep seeing conflicting results on if I'll need 1000w or if 850w is good enough.

Definitely think it's easy to creep the price up on the premise that "it's just X for Y more" and before you know it, everything is shiny except the cupboards but if something is really worth having for the extra I'm not opposed to it :)

Oh great, I was using partpicker and the RM1000e was "2023" and the RM1000x was "2021" and I just figured it was an upgraded version I didnt truly look into it but I can see overall it has better reviews, I also did see people saying it was hard to find reviews on the 'e' and it was ghost launched or something. I've swapped the 'x' into my build cheers, thats really helpful I appreiciate that

Yeah it's been a while since I picked up a new motherboard but it seems you can flash the bios without a CPU these days, means no holding onto older CPUs or borrowing a friends hah.

Orange is my thing, big fan of the colour so I agree with the "tasteless" outlook on others, I think it looks great. As for the ports, I've never bought a motherboard and not had enough ports but I'll double check it.

I believe its the lightning pg I think it was that was also in the same weightclass

What is that used for then? There is always some caveat with new tech that's easy to miss.

Tbh the part picker was set to compatibility and I don't recall there being an issue with anything but a bios flash needed

Might be worth considering a psu with that id think then, definitely food for thought. I only just picked up the xtx but I heard some stuff is coming out in January... of course i read that after it's been shipped

I'm trying not to fully break the bank, I'll have to have a look when I'm back at the pc but yeah that really helps, I doubt anything new NVIDIA is going to be xtx levels of appealing on price so gives a bit of time to consider things.

You've been a great help and insight, I appreciate it! I preordered the 9800x3d about an hour ago so I've got a few minutes or so to source the rest of the parts lol

Id rather not use adapters if I can help it but if i can buy an extra cable that's not the end of the world and solves the issue if I need to but then £15 isnt a break the bank on it either

The 4080 Super is worth considering at about the same price. Better upscaling and ray tracing, so better visuals and longevity.
I got my XTX for 750, the cheapest 4080 I could find is 950, I did consider the 4080 but not for that price diff

The X870 is down to USB4 really. Few weeks back the B650E-E from Asus was under £210 after cashback and is a very good motherboard. Not sure about pricing now.

GPU as other mentioned, 4080 super may be a good option, as it runs pretty cool, but last I checked, the 7900XTX was much cheaper, and on rasterisation is a very strong GPU.

PSU is the only thing that I’m set on one brand only and don’t look anywhere else: Seasonic.

Yeah I've got a CiT FX Pro in mine at the moment and always meant to upgrade it, that was years ago too and it's done me alright on a 9900k and a 3070, usually buy corsair at least however my son's machines have some EVGAs in and again, no issue

I love the look as well :)

I was considering it but it had one or two less USB ports than the PG or the Steel Legend, which mattered to me but may not matter to you. It's a good board otherwise.
Actually now I think about it, I have a USB card in my PC from my Oculus CV1, though I don't currently use any of the ports as I don't use a CV1 anymore but that was the only time I needed more.

For £120 you can get the

NZXT C Series 1200W Full Modular PCIe 5.0 80+ Gold Power Quiet Supply/PSU ATX3.0

I just saw this, I haven't seen much on the NZXT PSU's in my travels, do they get a good rep or are they a bit hit and miss?

Edit:

Turns out, I have an RM850 Corsair in my PC, I remember now I swapped the cit into another rig I think because I had a weak PSU in there already. Typically for the xtx, I cannot find the box with the cables in and I need another pcie 6+2

I picked up the RM1000x for all of the reasons above. Found out I have an RM850 in my machine at the moment but I cannot for the life of me find the box with the extra cables, so the XTX turned up and now the 3070 is just sitting there looking at it like it's a paperweight, this is pain.

I have another cable for pcie 6+2 but google said it was a bad idea to use mixed brands and I can't see the brand on this thing anyway.

I'm gunna probably have to send them an e-mail and ask or replace the PSU in my current rig until the cpu is here and move everything around it looks like.

Thanks again for looking at that, again another asterix with a component lol

That's a good idea, it would make sense if they are Type 4, since most of their PSUs are, but several of their newer PSUs (like the SHIFT) are Type 5, so ideally I'd really want more confirmation than the press release.

Got a response from Corsair:
Thank you for your patience. The cables from your RM850 (CP-9020196-UK) will not work on the RM1000X with SKU (CP-9020271-UK) as the RM1000X you provided the part number for uses Type-5 cables. Which have a smaller connection on the end that goes into the Power Supply, not allowing for other cables to fit. Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions.

Will be using the new PSU in my old rig for the time being if I can't find this box anywhere, gunna have a look in my loft tomorrow when I can get someone to hold the ladder as it's not in any of the usual places.

I imagine it's also the other way round but he's worded it like I asked if my RM850 cables would work in the RM1000x when I wanted to know if the RM1000x cables would work in the RM850 but thats kinda splitting hairs.

I've sent a reply mentioning that press release, he must think I meant the shift variant as that one appears to be Type 5. Got a reply pretty quickly so we'll see, I think just for safety sake regardless I'm going to just swap in the PSU at this point lol

Yeah, the SHIFT is deffo type 5! But, I copied and pasted the part code that was referenced and I think that's the not-shift variant, so it does appear that the RMx (2024) and the RMx SHIFT are both Type 5, unless the email is wrong and the press release is correct :o
He also did say it wouldnt even fit, so that would be the ultimate test would only take me a moment once it arrives in the mean time but he did get what I said the wrong way round so makes me a little cautious on if wires havent been wrongly crossed (pun intended) so we'll find out either way soon enough
