Hello all - ordered a 9070XT hellhound today, and looking for rest of build to go with it to replace my nearly 7 year old 2700X / Vega64 combo. Thinking something along the lines of :-

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,188.95 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Comments on above...
-Roughly black colour scheme for internals
-would prefer the XL case but out of stock everywhere! Hopefully standard is big enough? After more low key than the super bling fish bowl designs - any alternate "classy" options to the Fractal?
-Ref CPU cooler and RAM RGB - can you set colours so for example can just have an offwhite glow if I wanted?
-SSD - not sure - not in list as so many options but needed!- 2TB decent / fast NVME - what's best?
-MB - again not sure - went off popular mid spec choice? B850 or X870 the best choice
-PSU - better tier but seems to get good reviews with praise for turning fan off for noise when not needed
-Do I need anymore case fans - is so what?
-Anything else needed - ie thermal paste / extra cables / splitters etc?
-For info monitor is 35" UW3440x1440p

Ref budget - happy with cost of what's above. If any obvious ways to reduce cost I'm keen to know, or conversely way to improve spec within same cost or slightly more, open to ideas.

Over to you guys for help :) Thanks in advance

Hi .

Memory you ideally want 6000mhz C30 for AM5 as anything higher makes the CPU memory clock move from 1:1 to 2:1 make it slightly slower until you reach 7200mhz.

Grab a 1000w PSU the hellhound reccomends 900w but just to cover all bases and future upgrades.

The 9700xt hellhound is 327mm but with a 360mm aio in the front of the north reduces GPU clearance to 300mm in that case. Can fit a 240mm in the top.

Want a full tower the ANtec Flux is a nice alternative imo

T500 has been on offer lately, Fury Renegade is often priced well too. With SSDs, you really just want to get a deal because there's not much noticeable difference between any of the higher-end TLC PCI-E 4.0 drives.

The only required difference I'm aware of is that X870 MUST have USB4, but B850 normally does not. Some of the higher-end B850 boards are comparable (in their features/spec) to entry-level, or even midrange X870 boards.

There's a spreadsheet linked to here which goes into more detail:

HUB's roundup for X870 is here:

-Do I need anymore case fans - is so what?
2x140mm is enough, but if you're running a 9070 XT I'd recommend at least 1 more, because that's a lot of watts/heat for 2x140mm fans to deal with.

The placement of any AIO cooler will decide what fan mounts are viable to use.

I'm not a fan of this case due to the potential GPU length restrictions mentioned above. Lian Li's 216 is a nice simple looking case with decent stock cooling.

ARGB can be adjusted and controlled via the motherboard headers. Corsair usually expects you to use their iCUE software on their products, but setting up alternative RGB software to sync used to be complicated. Not sure on the current state of this stuff.

Looks like the North XL case may be coming back into stock next week at some places. Assume that would alleviate any space issues?

Gone ahead and ordered with an Antec flux case as watched a build video and looks decent!

Went for Auros Elite motherboard as seemed to get much better reviews on performance gains.

T500 ssd as was on offer, thanks!

Hopefully all will arrived tomorrow at some point, so wish me luck for build!

-Once built do I need to do anything in bios before installing windows?
-what’s next steps on setup progression once Windows installed?

As I mentioned above, last build was 7 ish years ago so have forgotten / totally out of loop on it! If anyone has any links to setup guides etc that are good please let me know

Thanks

Did you swap the memory ?

First boot can take up to 15mins for anything to show on screen and may reboot a few times this is because the motherboard is training the memory so be patient.

With AMD, you'll need to install the chipset drivers.

Note that in some cases the Wifi drivers are not bundled with the installer, so if you won't have Internet make a note of the workarounds/console commands.
