Looking for an interim upgrade before a full system overhaul in ~1 year. Have had my current setup for 2 years and it's been fairly capable at running most games at decent speeds, with the obvious resolution and detail lowering for the latest games.

It's the graphics card that I want to upgrade as I currently have a 9800XT. Would it be worth upgrading to a BFG or Gainward "Golden Sample" 6800GS to tide me over?

Nah mate, i wouldnt personally. The 9800XT is still a fantastic card for its age. Even though the upgrade is quite substantial, it's not nessasary if you're going to upgrade is a year or less.

Wait for DX10 and the next major platforms. Then you will see a massive difference.

Yeah sell your XT and with the money you get get a 6800 GS.It will be painful playing the latest games on a 9800 XT.

A year is a long time in pc terms.

Edit:

Just looked the 6800 GS is £165
I would get a 7600 GT for £140 and a pci-e mobo for 35 quid for your P4

You spend 15 quid more than getting a 6800 GS on agp but wow you get a massive boost in performance ;)

Agreed... Unless you can get a very good offer on your 9800XT then aim for either a X850 or 7800 GS :D

Maybe worth it if you sell the 9800XT. As said it's a fantastic card for its age. Owned one myself till Mid 2005.

I sold a used one at an auction site about 7 months with an arctic silencer for £125 + postage. They still go for over £100. Some people seem to want to pay tonnes for this card.

I'm swayed by the more sensible option of waiting, even though that PCI-E upgrade sounds tempting. But I anticipated the new motherboard upgrade as happening further down the road what with the next version of Windows and DX10 as others have mentioned.

To be honest my 9800XT has coped well over the last couple of years and I thought I would have to upgrade about now for the likes of Tomb Raider but it performed well. Yeah OK I'm not using AA or AF and rarely go above 1024x768 with medium detail but I have never wanted to crank up the graphics settings if it meant smooth gameplay.

My only hope for now is that Armed Assault plays well !!

I went from a 9800XT to a X800pro@pe.
Done the deal here in M&M some time last year. I went from scoring just over 3k to just over 6k on 3D Mark05.
I would say that if you want a quick cheap upgrade then do the same.
Sell the 9800xt for say 70quid and buy a 2nd hand modded x800pro like i did.
You want one of the old vivo x800's that have all 16 pipes unlocked and some benchys to prove it.
I am still in eye candy heaven and will be for quite some time.

Indeed, the 9800XT is cool :) I sold mine for £145 + postage on a auction site mid-last year.

You not going to need a DX10 card for about 15 months or more though, theres only Vista going to use them when the first ones come out, its a total waste buying a gfx card just for an OS, as by the time the DX10 stuff does start to trickle out, the R600/G80 (first ones) are going to be old hat and won't run em well so you will have to lash out again, cards come out every couple of months, DX10 games certainly wont be flooding out, id buy now as the cards we have are gona last for ages. :)
