Hey,
I may be getting one of these from a friend, just wondering, in combination with an athlon xp 3000+ and a gig of ram, will games like cod2 run well on dx9, would farcry work and would something like.. cs:s run well on high? Also bf2.

Thanks. I'd be playing at 1280x960.

This computer's got a gf 5900XT which kinda sucks (bf2 really doesn't work very well on it at 1024 medium settings, no shadows etc, although it's only got 512mb ram, which will be upgraded to 1gig.)
Call of duty isn't particularly good (~20-40fps on medium at 1024 with dx9 renderer, ~70 on everything on, extra for all textures with dx7 renderer).

How much of a performance increase would I expect?

George.

The 9800XT should give you a decent performance increase since it's got 256MB of RAM which is pretty essential for most of the games you mentioned. I'd certainly get that over the Pro if possible. It should be fine in CSS and Far Cry but I'm not sure how it'll cope with COD2 and BF2. Oh and get that gig of memory as soon as possible, you'll notice a big difference in performance.

It will perform better than your girlfriends FX5900 - as on the whole the FX range wasn't that good.

9800XT would be best as said above.

are you buying this card? or being given it? as there maybe other better options within your budget,

a 9800pro or XT is only going to give you a mix of low to medium quality in BF2 @ 1024X768. i know this because im a huge bf2 fan and i used to own a 9800pro and i can tell you that the XT`s are only 5 to 7% faster. they were not good value cards in their day.

does it beat an FX5900 ? sure, but then i probably wouldnt urinate on a 5900 if it was on fire, well, maybe a little, but only once it had started to smoulder...

Farcry is very playable on a 9800XT, so long as you dont want AA or AF!

Played through it twice with mine, and it coped fine. Just dont pay too much for it though - I paid £350 for mine when it came out. Kinda sucks now that technology has moved on...

What the hell are you all talking about?

All I was asking was why this person was saying all GeForce cards were poop when clearly they wern't/arn't.. I know the FX series were but I wasn't asking that :(
