generally diesels for short trips are regarded as a bad idea although this never stops taxi drivers from choosing them!

I imagine most taxi drivers make moderately long journeys every now and then, plus they will be chaining short trips together meaning the engine won't always be getting cold before each trip (I'm not suggesting that is as effective as long cruises on a-roads as it may involve stop-start city traffic, but it's not worst case scenario). It's a bit different from someone who is just using it for short journeys and then leaving it parked up for hours inbetween.
