A 360 Bug?

I do not know if this is a feature/bug of the VGA support for the 360.

I found this out sort of by mistake. If I connect my 360 to an output via the VGA cable, I will be able to select a resolution that I wish the 360 to output at.

If I then plug the 360 via the VGA cable into another monitor that doesn't support that resolution, I get no picture (as expected).

My problem is the fact that there is no other way of changing the resolution other than connecting it to the original monitor, but what if I no longer had it?

You cant change the resolution by connecting via component/scart, so how would you change back?

I have looked through all of my manuals and cannot find any information which gives a fix.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I thought this but I am 95% certain it retains its previous resolution when you connect back upto your monitor.

The story behind this is that I was using a small 17" TFT to connect to and then I changed to my 23" Samsung LCD TV and it wouldnt display the picture as the resolution was not supported by the tv.

If I connect via the component I can get a picture, reattach the VGA lead and nothing.

I have fixed it ok using my old monitor, if I didnt have it I would have been screwed.

It would be possible to ask someone using a VGA lead what the correct button sequence from boot is to change the resolution.

I had to do it blind when I was messing about with a VGA cable and my Samsung LCD TV.

What if you re-attach the normal non vga cable instead, surely it goes back to normal definitions then?

Problem is, re-attaching the non-VGA cable will not let you change any VGA options, the 360 will just remember what resolution it needs to use when the VGA cable is plugged in, so you'll always have to use a monitor with the correct res.

That would be the only real way to do it, unless a hard reset/factory setting is possible.

Still, you would have thought that they would have thought about this :p

Yeah, they should do, but you get the same problem on Windows, unless the 360 can get feedback from the monitor, then I doubt it'll be easily fixable.

Seems like a bit of an oversight if there's no other way round it other than attaching another monitor. Surely they must have thought of this?

They probably did, but didn't think it was necessary to implement something like this... silly MS.

I'd guess the reasoning behind this, is that the majority of users with the VGA, or any cable for that matter, will not actually change monitor all the time, and it would be in a living room / entertainment centre / desk environment for 99.99% of the time, so switching monitors and having resolution incompatibility problems was less likely to happen.
