A 4G router i can bridge to an AX6000

@WJA96 That’s really useful thanks .

Can I ask what the Wi-fi signal is like ? Is it strong as I think you mentioned that it might not be as good as a huawei for example ? Also I am keen to have the 5/2.4ghz bands merged - is that possible ? Or have you setup in a way that makes this not a problem ? Sorry and thanks for your help in answering these !

My comment about the WLAN was more to do with the drivers. Mikrotik insist on rewriting the drivers for all their wireless chipsets. Which means they can be buggier than you might expect for an established chipset. WLAN on the Chateau is fine. Ultimately it hits the same combined am0lification and antenna gain that every other WLAN does so it’s exactly as powerful as the legal limit. Whether that’s good enough for you, only you will be able to tell in your home with your walls made from whatever the walls are made from. It’s always a crap-shoot which is why you really need a wireless survey dine before you start to plan your home network. People laugh when I tell them that, but it’s SO say to show them which walls, floors and ceilings are the big blockers and why they have poor WLAN coverage.

Anyway, yes, you can have the same SSID on 2.4GHz and 5GHz. It’s a tick-box to enable or disable this.

Ok sounds good . Last question, I’m not that technical so other than turning on , setting the wireless password etc and selecting 4g bands to use would this be simple enough for a non technical person to setup ? I was torn between this and a huawei b715/818 - leaning toward this as like the idea that the band selection is built into the firmware vs needing a 3rd part app for the huawei

Yes. You literally type the Wireless Password for each band into the appropriate box and click save. Bottom line, if I recommended it, you can always come back on here and I’ll help you through any issues.

Mine came with a European adapter (so it needs a converter) and I’m not using any additional external antennae because to do it right you have to open the case and in the places I’ve tested it it’s worked fine.

In terms of the 4g band selection would it be possible to get a screenshot of what this looks like and if possible what details it shows ie does it show cell id etc of what connected too ? Also does the Wi-fi work well if have the same ssid and password for 5 and 2.4ghz , conscious that it doesn’t seem to support proper Wi-fi band steering . Thanks again !!

It doesn’t show cell ID you’re connected to. You just get a series of tick boxes to pick channels.

For WLAN band selection the client is the major decision maker, not the access point. Ubiquiti make a big thing about band steering but actually it can make matters worse if it sees say, an Apple device, and sends it only 5GHz beacon responses irrespective of signal strength. It basically forces 5GHz capable devices onto 5GHz even with a weaker signal because band steering doesn’t actually take signal strength into account. It’s much better to configure RSSI to kick clients which forces the client to search for the strongest signal.
