Hello all,

Could you please assist me in putting together a spec for a computer? My old one is wobbling around on its last legs and it’s been a considerable amount of time since I last looked into putting anything together (circa opteron 144) its even been subject to a surge courtesy of a lightening strike on a phone line hitting my internal modem and frying a few sockets. The time is coming to take it on one last walk to the woods with a shotgun and a shovel.

The replacement system I’m looking for must have or be able to do the following:

1) It must be able to output a digital sound signal to my external Dac, no need for a soundcard. I’m using A Cambridge Audio Dacmagic and play my flacs from a Qnap Nas.
2) I don’t want to mess around overclocking, to much hassle, been there and done that.
3) I have a monitor, keyboard, mouse and I could salvage the Hiper type R modular power supply 580w if needed.
4) I don’t play a huge amount of games, mainly counter strike but will be looking to try others in the future.
5) I play about with photography and the triple ram slots look like they may help with RAW images.
6) I don’t need hard drives, have a few sata ones already.
7) I do need a new case. I don’t like see through loads of flashing light set ups, the Antec 300 looked a nice case.

Budget, it’s got to be around the £600 quid mark.

Thanks for any help peeps.

What kind of output does your Dac have, is this spdif or something like as most motherboards come with that I believe?

Should work fine and the HD 5770 means you're ready for a bit more gaming in the future. You don't particularly need 6GB RAM in tri-channel for photo editing...

Hmm, computer lied to me. It's a bit over but you could knock the case down to an NZXT Beta/CM Elite 310 if you wanted to stay in budget.

Thanks chaps, a few questions though.

Is there much difference between the 4 core and 6 core? is this as good as the intel cpus?

The motherboard needs to be able to output Spdif for the dac, or optical out. For the graphics I was thinking 5770 as well. I like the silverstone case, somewhere to hide my camera and ipod cables.

Is my hiper 580 type R no longer a compatable power supply?

Forgot to say i have a dvd drive allready.

any one else wanna chip in?

Hipers aren't known for their reliability, best to change to something like the Corsair (or OCZ/Antec).

6 cores just mean you have a bit more power for certain things, but for gaming, photo stuff it's quite overkill atm. If you were video encoding then you'd make good use of the extra 2 cores.
