Hi,

It been a couple of years since I last put a heatsink on a processor. I really really hate this bit of the build process.

I just checked the as5 website for advice. Now what I used to do was apply a rice grain sized chunk in the middle of the process, smear it gently out over the processor surface and whack the cooler on. I remember cleaning the processor and heatsink surfaces and I remember putting a little grease on the relevant part of the heatsink base and then thoroughly wiping it off again (to fill those little valleys). All advice from the as5 website at the time I think.

Now what they are saying on the website for dual core intel processors is align the processor in such and such a way and put a line of as5 down the middle of the processor heat spreader. If the processor is aligned right the as5 goes over the actual processor underneath. Then whack on the heatsink. No spreading. Just give it a tiny wiggle if possible, No pre-application to the heat sink surface either.

Has anyone done it this way. I feel an urge to smear the entire top surface and want to know if I should resist.....

I have done this last week and it works :D the conroe chip is in the centre so there is no need to put it all over.

AS5 is acts as an insulator you know :) so the less the better, no better heat transfer than the two (heatsink and CPU) touching eachother, best way i found is use a piece of card or something (anything particularly rigid) and spread the AS5 evenly like greasing your cooking dish when your making a cake, removing the IHS works even better but we'll not get into that ;)
