I'm just playing around with the idea of getting a new rig and taking my current one to work (the joys of working in IT).

I've come up with this so far. I'm going to nick the 970 out of my current rig for now, so don't fret too much about the missing card, but if anyone could suggest a way to get a decent performance without spending around a grand that'd be ideal :D

So yeah, if there's any way to bring the cost down while keeping a good level of performance, that'd be lovely :)

I'm currently gaming on a utrawide 1440 monitor so it requires a bit of punch.

for argument's sake, where would you skimp?

and if i was to replace the 970, what would you recommend?

cheers guys!

is there a noticeable difference between the gaming 3 and 7 motherboards that would be worth the extra money?

also guessing that a 1070 is pretty much where i need to be looking with regards to GPU?

lee's build looks better :)

If you're at 3440x1440 then yes a 1070 would be the minimum IMO, and it would be a good step up from the 970. A 1080 would be ideal at your res but they are not quite so good value for money compared to the 1070.

I took the plunge and went with the 1080 so when I finally get my superwide next month I should be good for >60fps with all the eye candy switched on.
I haven't seen any reviews for the 1070 @ 3440x1440 although if you don't mind taking the detail down a notch for the odd game it'll run just fine.
Current wisdom suggests that the 1070 runs about as fast as the 9 series Titan X, if that helps.

yeah, i just don't know whether i can afford to stick the extra on top for a 1080. is there a specific model of 1070/80 that's ahead of the others? much like the MSI 970 that was a complete winner (until people found out about the 3.5GB RAM thing :D)

also, genuinely interested about the differences in the mobos, just in case i'd be better saving or spending :)

thanks for your answers so far guys. i know how annoying it must be for a bloke to just keep asking question upon question.

I went with Palit Jetstream, had really good reviews for performance as well as cooling and noise. If I hadn't chosen that then the MSI would've probably been my choice. Can't see the 1070 versions being much different in this regard.
As for mobo's I tend to buy Asus but now I think about it I'm not sure why.

i've come to this conclusion this morning for a possible purchase today.

thoughts?

i'm going to use the SSD from my current build to save a bit of dollar.

is there a point to go mSATA or m2 at this time?

How big is the SSD you have now? I don't know enough about m2 or mSATA to pass comment, but the basket you linked looks pretty good from where I'm sat.

As a 1070 gaming X owner, I don't think its worth the £50 premium over the Armour version, unless you are buying for looks only :) I only went with the Gaming X as the 1070 had only just been released an this was the only one other than Founder Editions (which I also tried and it was too loud) that I could get my hands on.

not worth the premium for the higher clocks though?

If it was me I would get the Armour version also, that's a nice card and the price is good too all things considered. The extra clock speed will only net you a couple of fps in real terms anyway.

The 250 SSD will do you for now, I'm willing to bet you'll want a 500Gb by January latest which will be handy if there's a sale on :-)

With GPU boost 3.0 they all boost higher than the advertised clocks anyway. Plus in reality going from 1900 to 2000 MHz is 1-2fps! The Armor version will overclock over 2ghz just like the Gaming X, and anything more than that is down to silicon lottery depending how good your chip is.

armour version it is then! well, i guess unless anyone can give me a reason to get m2 or mSATA, i'll be buying it shortly!

EXCITE.

mSATA was old before it was new so doesn't really exist. M.2 is super fast but real world difference that you would notice is negligible unless you are editing 4k video or something that needs very high IO. Given the recent discount on the MSI armour, its a steal for a 1070, worth it IMO. I've added a cheaper PSU, still good quality and plenty of power for one GPU. It doesn't have black cables though so a little uglier. Depends if you care about that or not.

I think most i5 also struggle with 3000mhz ram too, so i went doesn to 2400 to save some dosh. I dont think there will be much performance hit from 2666 which is probably what you'd get on the 3000mhz kit

I would stick with the Gaming 3 bundle, as it is a more expensive board for the same price.

Also go with a 7200rpm HDD such as the Seagate in my spec.
